Hey y'all,

I've been searching the forums to find fellow, potential interviewers for Fresno State's DPT program starting this Summer in 2017.

Just trying to connect with anyone out there that is in the same nausea inducing boat as I am so if any of you are going to the interview day on Feb, 4th show some love! Maybe we can help each other out with anything that we've heard about the upcoming day from previous students.

Hope to hear from some of you!

Hello!

1st year Fresno State DPT student here. Best piece of advice for the interview is to relax and be yourself. I know it is such a common and obvious piece of advice, but it is true. The interviewers can see if you are nervous or if you are embellishing your story. If you do the work and prepare beforehand, there should be nothing to worry about.

Here's how the day went last year (not entirely certain if it will remain the same this year):
The 160 students were split into 2 groups: morning and afternoon. Within those groups, we were split again to 2 more groups. We were either assigned to do the interview or tour first and then switch. I think the interview lasted around an hour for us. I was in a group with 3 other people, and we interviewed first. I cannot speak for others, but my interview was pretty laid back.
My two interviewers asked us all questions I've prepared for:
Tell me about yourself. Why PT? Why Fresno State? Give me an example of your leadership. Give me an example of how you handled an uncomfortable situation. Where was your favorite place to do your observation hours? Least favorite? How do you spend your time relaxing?
The tour was straight forward. I was part of the morning group, and I think we were able to finish up everything before noon.

Once again, just relax when you get there. Do your preparation now and there should be nothing to worry about. The purpose of the interview is for the faculty to determine if you are a good fit for the program. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I've noticed your post for sacramento dpt as well. Seems like we're in the same boat! I can't decide whether to interview with fresno or sacramento since both are on the same day, although I'm leaning towards sacramento. How are things with you regarding this situation?

Socalboy7,

Thank you, my friend! It's always good to hear directly from a student whose made it pass the threshold. I've been in correspondence with Ashley Hart, the admissions director, and this year seems to be similar in regards to the two different sessions. I opted for the afternoon session. Since you're in the program, is there an emphasis on neurological research and application. That's something I'm very interested in at the moment. Thanks, Socalboy7.

MelrosePT,

Great to hear we're in this together! I opted to go to both interviews because why not give myself the chance to get into either. I scheduled an interview with Sac at 9am and Jerri, the director, said the interview shouldn't last more than 45 minutes at most. She said it would only be me and 3 members of the interview team and that's its very relaxed as they are just trying to see if we would be a good fit for their program just like Socalboy7 said about Fresno. And then I'll skip the campus tour in hopes of making it to Fresno by 1pm for the afternoon session. However, Ashley Hart said that students who are coming from Sac have the option of skipping the tour and going straight into the interview around 2:30pm which should give most of us plenty of time to make it to both interviews.

So if you can, try for both! I hope to see you there!

If you're interested in neuro, don't be afraid to talk about it! I talked about my experiences in neuro during my interview and unbeknownst to me at the time, my interviewer was the neuro teacher. I'd say it definitely helped me talking about my experiences. I would say take a look at the department website and study some of the faculty and the type of research they do.

How did everyone feel about their interview?

Hey ya,

I felt pretty good about all of my answers except for saying "um" about 3 times. I felt that I was direct with my answers and tried to bring everything back to the original question at the end. This interview was definitely more professional compared to Sac's earlier in the day. Probably due to the other 4 students in my group. But man did I fall hard for Fresno's program after the walk through before the interview. After seeing how much the current students love what they are learning and how they are actively engaging with their work was inspiring. And they had so many cool labs! I got that "I belong here" feeling. Fresno is definitely at the top of my list now. Friday couldn't come sooner. Good luck to you and everyone else who was at the interview. I'm just glad they don't make a decision based on your questions from the general Q&A. I felt I had a "so so" question and felt like: :whoa:

I went to Fresno State for undergrad and it was a wonderful experience. Did they say we will hear by Friday?! I was told 2-4 weeks...

During the Q&A, a prospective student asked when we would find out about the decision and Dr. Trueblood said that they would meet on Wednesday and run through everyone's interviews, tally up the points, and send out their final decisions by Friday.

Ok, gotcha. That makes sense. Thanks. So I would assume the first letters will arrive within a week or so from this Friday.

I got in and accepted. If you will attend also let's exchange contact information.

They sent an email this morning and they require a response by Feb 24th so they can start moving down the waitlist when someone declines. Good luck and or congratulations!

Did you hear back?

SVDPT_91,

Congrats my friend! Unfortunately I was not asked to attend this year. Super buzzkill as they were my top choice. I was accepted to SDSU and still waiting to hear from Sac. But where ever I go, I'll always have that interview day haha. Once again, congratulations! You're going to have a killer time at that program.

I didn't have much of an expectation of Fresno's program but only applied because it's a CSU. Boy was I wrong, Fresno became one of my top choice as well after the interview day! Unfortunately, I wasn't offered admission for this cycle. Nevertheless, congratulations for those accepting their admission!

Thanks! I'm sure it will be a lot of fun to go to school in San Diego also. Congratulations on your acceptance there!

I'm attending NAU. Sac state was meh compared to the facilities of NAU and it's cheaper. Plus, It's only 2.5 years. Do you know when sac state gets back to us?

Congratulations on NAU! They were my 2nd choice because of the incredible facilities and interdisciplinary program. Fresno State has a smaller new building as well as new equipment. They also put an emphasis on interdisciplinary work and have a shorter program. I went to undergrad there and it was great. Congrats to everyone else too and good luck!

Seems like a lot of us applied to NAU and CSUF. I got into CSUF and am #4 on NAU's alternate list, but am having trouble making up my mind. Fresno's equipment and program were very impressive, and its not that much more expensive, but NAU has the shorter program and seemed like a better fit. Any thoughts?

Are you going to NAUs Phoenix site?

Fresno State also has a shorter program than most schools and it is my understanding that if you qualify for financial aid and are also a CA resident then 1/3 of tuition is refunded. But I haven't looked into it yet.

I went to Fresno State for undergrad and was the PT organization President for 2 years. If anyone has questions about the area, program, cost of living, etc I can most likely get you an answer. Let me know! NAU is a great school also.

Is that tuition refund just for Fresno state? CSUN gave out about 6000 a semester if you qualified, but 1/3 sounds crazy.

Taken from the handout they distributed:

33.3% of the academic year fee rate will be set aside for student financial aide. (Out of state students are not eligible). Tuition fee $8,074.00 and total $8,493.50 (per semester).

You should definitely do Fresno if the tuition is like that. No brainer

Sacramento State does a similar thing with financial aid. They really help their students out. I got into both Sac and Fresno but will most likely accept Sac. Did any of you have the chance to find out what kind of clinical rotation opportunities that Sac has?

I'm not sure about Sac but I've heard Fresno tries hard to accommodate what their students want. I have talked to past students who had clinicals locally in the Valley and all the way to Alaska. And the student who led my tour said he was talking to his program advisor about an opportunity at a military base in Germany.

But during the year there is also a neuro and ortho clinic on campus. The PT students also take part in a balance screen a couple times a year where they work with pharmacy, nursing, and kinesiology students. It's a great interdisciplinary experience.

I saw a student who will be attending Sac went into pretty good detail on one of the Sac threads.

Hey there, I was accepted to Fresno State and I plan on attending! Anyone else out there in my shoes? I would like to start looking for housing and roommates!

Is the interview at fresno a group interview??

In fresno,
Is there any abroad opportunities?
Do you dissect the cadavers or are they predissected?
Do we share the cadavers with any other health care professionals : nursing students, pharm, med etc
Is there a research project done at the end of the program?
How many clinical rotations are there?
Is there dorms, or Univ apartments? If not is housing cheap nearby?
I got an interview for feb 2019!!🙂
