I was just checking the AMA-Frieda website and for EM and IM specialties in the State of New York, it shows some programs are 3 years long and the number of hours per week worked is 54-65.

However I've heard different that EM and IM work about 80-100 hours per week.

Whats the real version of the story?

Freida is useful for program contact information.

Freida asks for average number of hours per week over the entire year. Hence, we average the busy months and the not-so-busy months. 75+ hour/wk months averaged with some 40 hour/wk elective months = 50-60 hour weeks.

EM specifically limits to 60 hours/wk, I think.

aPD is correct that the RRC for EM restricts work hours to 60/week on average. That restriction only applies during EM months, however, and while on off-service rotations we as EM residents do the same number of hours and are held to the same regulation as whatever service we are on (surgery, IM, etc.). That may be up to 88 hrs/week depending on if that service has the 10% exemption or not.

Thanks for the clarification aPD, been trying to educate husband on this issue but he kept taking Freida's posting as the rule of law.

Whoa, what months are those?! Even working from 8-4 every day would results in 40 hours a week if you worked Mon-Fri...and that doesn't even include home call or the weekends. Add on an overnight call or two and that's way over 40 hours!

It blows my mind to think residents could ever work that few hours!

IM has a fair number of outpatient-only months. Clinics generally run 9-5 and, in some programs (mine for instance) you won't have any night call and may only have to work 1 weekend (if any) in that month. Maybe a cross-cover or sick call shift or two worked in there. Easy to get at or near 40h that way. Heck, I had a primary care month in residency that not only had no call but also had three half-days of "reading time" built in. I barely hit 30h a week that month. It was sweet.
