My friend called and sent me picture txt of letter that he was accepted to NYU already for class of 2015... This is crazy and he isn't pulling my leg. He has submitted everything in adsas already too.

Acceptance without interview at NYU? Really? 🙄

Are you sure your friend isn't joking?

What's your friend's stats?

He was probably waitlisted for the class of 2014.. then maybe he imroved his application significantly(ie DAT scores) that NYU decided to give him the spot for 2015..

👍

At any rate, congrats to him!

DrReo, what exactly are you?

I don't mean any offense, I am just very curious because your status says School Admin, yet you have pre-dental friends and pre-dental questions, and you are also active in the Dental forum among dental students and dentists.

Schools cannot inform you of your acceptance until after December 4. Your friend was probably waitlisted for the 2014 class or he is lying.

From what I've heard schools aren't allowed to accept people until December. I guess its possible what the earlier posts said about him applying last year. Your post seems pretty fishy with the added-he's not pulling my leg-and the "reassuring" he has submitted everything part. Its as if you are trying to convince us since it is not very believable. So what is your motive for convincing us that he got an acceptance? Are you just trying to stir the pot and rile up a bunch of pre-dents for your amusement?

This is my guess. 👍

Why? Who would really want to attend NYU as their first choice anyways? 😛

That's the type of humor I would expect from a fresh-off-the-boat, autistic, five year old Chinese boy with Down's syndrome. Good Job.

Hey I noticed you're in the academy of LDS dentists from your predents site...are you LDS by chance? Just curious.😀

Are you asking if I am going to the conference? Yes, I am in the organization. But I am not religiously affiliated.

Nice one. Sorry if I offended you. 🙂

S'all good. It's jus that...NYU ain't the only school deservin all this bad rap. I mean there's BOSTON, USC, COLORADOlol...

im not sure i udnerstand why these schools have bad rap. I mean, i would seriously consider NYU over Buffalo just for the city. But on second thought, I'd probably go with Buffalo, but still....

ohh man you talking about the craigslist killa; come on i dont think couple killers & bad guys are not gonna give a school a bad rep regarding the education that they provide.

I don't even think you can compare a lot of these other schools with NYU. I also picked NYU over Buffalo, Temple, Western, USN, and USC. In fact, I'd pick NYU over almost any other school in the US! They are really up there in terms on the types of research done at the school and the new dean has changed the school in many other ways as well. The current dean was a dean at UCSF prior to coming to NYU and he has made many changes. You cannot trust the rumors a few students have spread about NYU. I'm not sure how many of you have taken a tour of the campus or if you've talked to the staff there, but after going to many many interviews, no other school even compares to NYU in my opinion!

NYU is a top notch school, but noone wants to graduate with 400-500k debt.

That should no longer be an issue now that they have the "income based repayment plan." As long as you make less than a certain amount, (I think it's like $350K, you just have to pay about $1300 a month for 25 years (and after 2014, it will be even lesser than that and it'll be for 20 years). After that time, the amount remaining and all of the interest that has added up will be cancelled. So whether you take 300K or 400K or 500K, based on this plan, you will just have to pay around $1300 per month even if you're making around 200K a year.

That's not entirely true. You monthly payment is based on your income, which is why it's called an income-based repayment. Also, you are responsible for the interest if your monthly payment doesn't cover it. You can have the remaining balance of your loans forgiven after 25 years, but that is dependent upon meeting certain criteria.

I know that NYU will give you an offer without an interview if you meet a certain GPA and DAT. However getting an offer prior to Dec. 1st seems incorrect. Maybe their BA-DDS joint degree program?

Yes, I called and asked for myself..if I take a loan of about 400K, and let's say I make around 200K, then I will have to pay just $1300 per month. I will qualify for the income based repayment plan because I have a huge debt and would be making less than the max amount.

And yes the interest just keeps adding to the principal amount, and after 25 years, the entire loan amount, and all the interest that has added up is all forgiven. So yes the interest just keeps adding on but I'd only pay the $1300 per month and at the end, all the interest is also cancelled.

I called two different lenders and they both said the same exact thing. All government loans qualify for this income based plan, as long as your debt is significantly large. The income based repayment plan isn't a good idea for someone who has a smaller debt (like 100K) because they will actually end up paying back a lot more over those 20 years, but it is a very good idea for someone who has a debt between 300K to 500K because they are only responsible for that $1300 per month (this amount can go up or down just a little depending on your salary).

Why Colorado? Just out of Curiosity??

Sounds to good to be true, but then again there are always loopholes within law.

ok I just called a lender again and they said the same thing. As long as you pay your monthly payments and don't miss them, you will be forgiven after 25 years (20 after 2014) and all of the interest that has added up and the principal loan amount is all cancelled because otherwise what would be the use of this plan? Because otherwise we'd be making these monthly payments for 25 years and then have all this interest add up and still have all this money to pay back at the end of the 25 years. They made this plan because for people like us who have to barrow very large amounts of money, it becomes hard for us to make those large monthly payments (which is usually for 10 years) but on this plan, you end up paying less monthly but for a longer period, so it's affordable.

Without knowing his meaning, I would assume cause its crazy expensive for OOS applicants...strange to be included with the other schools though because its public and the admission standards are much higher than the other listed schools.

It is important to remember that the amount forgiven after 25 years of payments (which next year the govt is changing to 20 years) is considered income and you will be taxed heavily for it. So hopefully you are making $200,000 after 25 years of practice but say you are forgiven $300,000 that shows you have made $500,000 and will be taxed at least 39% so it adds up quickly.

Guys... Did any of you read the "class of 2015" part? That's from last years cycle...

This hasn't been decided yet. They might just forgive it completely or they might count it as income. And even if they count it as income, I'm sure that after 25 years, we will be able to pay 200k to 300K......just buy a house and rent it out...and sell it after 25 years and pay off that tax 🙂

It has been decided and that is how the IBR is written for now anyways. Listen, I would love it if the remaining debt would be forgiven especially because I am attending an expensive private institution, but do you think the govt is going to pass up on collecting an extra $200,000-$300,000? I don't think so.
