Hi SDN,

I am a recent grad who has been working in life science consulting for the past couple months. I originally wanted to go to medical school but my grades were sup par 3.2 cgpa and 2.9sgpa. I was a finance major at a pretty good school.

In my junior year I said screw med school lets go into consulting, make good money, and still work in life sciences..

Now I've been working in consulting for nearly 4 months and have decided it's not for me. Working with all these healthcare companies made me realize I want to work with patients directly and not impact the healthcare system indirectly. Honestly I want to have more of an impact on the healthcare system and patients. I can only do that by being a doctor. Maybe I can write my essay on this?

I have 2 research publication, have shadowed, volunteer constantly, and had great leadership in college. I don't want to toot my own horn too much but I think my app is pretty good minus the grades. I got a D in genetics, and C's in biochem and calc II. Tell you the truth I just wan't committed. I played college sports so I traveled constantly and I fudged around like it is nobody's business in college.

I know now that as a career(40 years or so) I can't work in the business world.

I want to know my options. What does a timeline for me look like?

First things first, a bcpm of 2.9 will not get you into any MD programs. While I can't speak about DO programs (Goro), it appears that you're gonna need to go to a postbac program and show that you can do well in multiple science classes at the same time.

I wasn't expecting MD honestly. But for DO would a postbacc be appropriate? What should I try to score? Can anyone chime in on that?

Also a follow up. If I retake classes (lets say 3 or 4 classes), does it need to be at the same time? Could I work for another year take 2 night classes a quarter and call it good?

A post-bac that will allow you to re-take any F/D/C science coursework will do wonders for yoru GPA via AACOMAS policy. I figure a 2-3 year timeline and you should get B+/A grades. Score int he high 20s on the MCAT, and you're good to go.

As I've pointed out many times in these forums, some of my all-time best students have been in their 30s and 40s! My oldest student ever was 53.

Keep in mind that you'll need the ECs: volunteering with patients (to see if you really like being around sick people) and shadowing.

Post-bac programs are a dime a dozen, too.
