Hello Everyone,

I am currently a first year medical student at Ross University in Dominica. In case some poeple may not know it is an MD school. I recently applied to a couple of DO schools, NSU, LECOM-FL, and West Virginia. Basically I am wanting to attend a DO school because I don't like the type of education I am currently getting at Ross. Do you guys think that the fact that I have been at Ross for a semester already will hurt my application or will they see it as a positive sign since I have already been in a medical school type of setting and have done well? I would appreciate any input from people.

Thank You and Good Luck to all

I would not even mention it.

I don't think it will hurt you. I'm not sure how much it will help. Probably not more than doing well in undergrad or grad school.

May I ask why you are unhappy with your education thus far? You may want to address this in your personal statement or in your secondary applications. They may ask about this in interviews. Just remember to be professional and not bash your school or make it sound like a personal attack.

I do need to mention it because in the ACOMAS application you need to disclose any education that you have had. If I don't put in there mye ducation at Ross then it will be lying which they will notice right away when they ask me what I have been doing since May and I don't know what to tell them.

But thanks for your quick response.

I think if you present it right they will see it as a positive. At least you have an idea what med school is all about. That being said I think you will need to present a strong case as to why you want to go to DO school and not ROSS. And like Lizzy said, you need to be careful about how you talk about ROSS.
Good luck!

As far as being unhappy with my current education. Basically the teaching here is non-existent. Profesors literally tell us in lecture that they are too lazy to teach certain things. We have some prof. that on a regular basis give incorrect information. Aside form that, there are just some practices here that I don't agree with, for example we aren't shown our scores for our final exams, we are simply given our grade for the course. That's not cool with me. As far as addressing it, I will address it in my secondary applications and I will not bash my school in an interview. I will simply tell them that I am not happy with the education that I am receiving and if they ask for specifics then I will explain to them the lack of teaching that goes on here.

Thanks for your quick response

The problem I see with this is that you will come off as using DO schools as a complete backup since Ross failed to meet your needs. Why don't you try transferring to SGU or AUC? I hear SGU is on top of things. But to answer your question, I think they won't welcome your Ross didn't work out, so I'm gonna apply to your DO program...

Oh, I see, you already are at Ross and you are unhappy. That is a tough situation, all you can do is try 👍
