I have wondered about the number of surgery residents that switch into anesthesia. Is that relatively easy to do considering that they have acquired some usable skills during their residency that can be applied towards anesthesia? Are program directors more eager to take such applicants?

Okay, so it's not that difficult. And, I would assume it's because a resident is a better commodity than a fresh applicant out of school.

For example, being able to put central lines, chest tubes, taking care of sick patients in SICU, already having done internship, those are the skills I'm talking about.
