I am a non-trad student with a BS and MTS in theology. I am starting my pre-reqs at a local community college. Could I/should I call the school and just say," I want to know what you want for me to be competitive in three years?"

It would seem that this strategy would clear up any questions of what they want in terms of classes, volunteering, shadowing, etc and possibly demonstrate some nerve that could be valuable at application time.

Thoughts???

Rob

well ya sure, but they can't specifically tell you what would be good to make yourself like a unique indivdual. I don't see why they would waste their time telling you information that you should find out yourself either. I would recommend just reading more posts.

Contact the school and inquire about when they have an open house or summer seminar. In the past, they have held two summer seminars typically in June and July. You're invited to the school for the day. These provide excellent information, allow you to meet admission office folks, admission committee folks, current students, and they give a tour of the school. All your questions should get answered at one of these.....800-535-TCOM or go to their web at http://www.hsc.unt.edu/ and email the admissions office. Good luck!

It does not hurt to call and find out what you might need to make yourself more competitive...also you might want to check out TCOM website and also
AACOM website. There are lots of ways to obtain information via the school or schools and through the internet....good luck :luck:

Ken Anderson is the new head of admissions. He would be more than willing to talk to you. Attend the next open house at TCOM.

Hey Rob,

I am an MS3 at TCOM and I can tell you that you are already looked at favorably due to your non-trad and theological background. Now you just need to show you can perform well in the pre-reqs, and do at least average on the MCAT. We have had several students from the seminary school become medical students here. And one of the directors of student affairs has her degree from Southwest Seminary in FW. Good luck and chug along!!

I used to meet with the dean of a MD school every other semester for 3 years while I was doing undergrad. She acted as an advisor and helped me out with what classes to take, and more importantly with where I could volunteer. I told her I wanted to be somewhere that allowed lots of direct patient contact and it was she that lead me to the free downtown health clinic.

So it would be a great idea to call them and ask to set up an appointment time where the director or dean of admissions could sit down and talk with you. Take your transcripts so they can see what you have done thus far. Most schools are more than happy to meet with applicants as they are going through their pre-med requirements.

TCOM is a very approachable school. I have shadowed a med student, called and taken a tour and visited during a open house. They are very friendly and accommodating.

I personally like TCOM. I plan to apply there here in a year or two. They do have open houses once in a while. You should check them out. They are very informative. I went to one and they tell you a lot about the school, how to get in, etc etc. You also can go online and check what are the req. for different schools. If you want to go to TCOM though you have to take 14 hours of Biology. Thats something that of COM school don't require but TCOM does.
They are great people. They are very nice and I think if you have a chance you should go visit them.

TCOM rocks. go willing, i will start there next fall.

See ya at the upcoming open house 👍

Stay in touch with me and if I can arrange it when I get up there, I think it would be cool if y'all came and "shadowed" me for a day so you can see what its like from the inside! Best of luck and enjoy your summer! 👍 🙂 👍
