maybe cause it's early and i'm cranky...but i think what irritates me the most is when people post their dat scores with AA 18, or AA 17, and there like oh but i didn't study...like oh i'm way smarter than that, this is just the score i got from rolling out of bed and taking the test....
um we get it, we all want to be doctors were all smart, some of us just aren't so self consious that we need to defend our 18's...i'm sure my post will be closed in a matter of seconds but it was nice to release my frustration anyways

Huh.

I dont think they're trying to be narcissistic. I think theyre trying to track their progress. Some do better off the bat than others, depending on what classes they are currently in or have just finished. This is not a mind-game type test, its basically a pretty straightforward how much do you know type deal. Some people know more than others, thats it.

I scored a 20 and I only had time to study for a week...and I got totally wasted the night before.

Those types of posts irritate me too.

I've seen something similar like that regarding some people taking a few undergrad classes as well. They go something along the lines of, "well I was already accepted to dental school and I didn't study at all for the test and then took it and still scored way better than most the class."

So self-righteous.

Most people don't post if they score 18's or below anyways.

boy aren't we a little cranky. as we can all tell this post was directed at me for my other thread.

first off, if you have a problem with it, we are all adults here (or at least i thought so) just pm me and we can talk about it there, instead of bringing an obvious personal issue out on the forum.

and secondly, i was merely trying to gauge how much i really needed to study each section and how accurate the report is. you don't need to automatically jump to conclusions about my reasons for posting (another problem that could just be solved wth a pm)

sorry for having irritated you so much, that was not my intention.

Doog, I think this is directed at people who take thier acutal DAT without studying and try to defend themselves. Pretty much everyone takes their first practice without studying, otherwise it wouldn't really be diagnostic.

Anyway, I ran into some people at my school who did this (and gave me the "Oh I didn't study I'm actualyl pretty smart lol" excuse).

First thing that came to my head was: If you're so smart, how did you take such an important test without studying?

wait till you actually get into dental school and deal with the type that think they are God's gift to dentistry.

Yeah, can't wait.

don't flatter yourself...it wasn't about you...keep reading some of the posts...you know the one md student who just took the dat for "fun" um yeah that was my favorite, gosh i have $175 in my pocket, what in the world can i do with this money...i know i'll take the exam that freaks out half of the pre dental students...

yeah now i'll get an angry pm from that person...SORRY, i'm entitled to my feelings and opinions (um no matter how crazy and wrong they sound)...i just need to rant...and might i say i feel much better!

so sorry doogie, lighten up, geeze😀 and bring that 18 to a 22+ and we can go at it again some time after we're dentist.

According to their scores, they're not "smarter than that." They're just average. But their ego's definately up there...prolly a 24 ego.

wait till you actually get into dental school and deal with the type that think they are God's gift to dentistry.

interesting. i personally wouldn't want to know what God intended my gift to be in. it'd suck if I tried to find out and God said, "dentstd, i intended for your gift to be in dental hygiene!" 🙁 :scared:

I got an 18AA, not proud of it, but not ashamed either. I do hope dental schools look at more than just a DAT score to establish a person's career for a lifetime. What happens here is that scores become over inflated with 20s and 22s on the AA, but they represent the top percentile in regards to the DATs, and do not signify the overall application pool. Out of those maybe half of them come down to have the GPA to have a SURE FIRE seat in the school of their choice. What I am trying to say is, WHAT HAS ALWAYS BEEN SAID BEFORE: SDN AND PREDENTS DO NOT SIGNIFY THE WHOLE APPLICATION POOL!😱 There are so many factors that come into play. A given dent school may let a person with a 3.3 GPA and 20+AA on the DAT in, but they will have to come back and balance the GPA with someone with a higher GPA, so they may take a person with a 3.8 GPA and 18AA 😀 to balance out the statistical side of their admissions. Applicants with a 3.7+ GPA and 20+ DAT are rare, it seems to me. So in my opinion after a dent school maybe lets in the first 20-30 seats with people who have these HOLY GOD STATS, there are still on average 40-50 seats remained to be filled with regular, average Joes like most of us lurkers. This is where I think the dent schools go back and forth between those with good GPAs and average DATs and those with average GPAs and GODLY DATs socres. That is where LORs and ECs come into play to set you apart from someone who has the same stats as you. So in the end, every his and her own. Anyways that seems to be my 2 cents. For all I know they flip a coin on the first 500 applications they recieve

I think you are in denial if you think that applicants with a 3.7gpa and 20+ DAT are rare. What you are suggesting may have been the case a few years ago but with the competition on the rise, it certainly does not hold true anymore. check out predents.com

No I'm not in denial. You should think before you write. Not every applicant that was accepted to dental school has posted on predents, for the same reasons that people with 17 and 18AAs do not post their scores, THAT IS WHY PEOPLE THAT POST ON PREDENTS ARE NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE OVERALL APPLICATION POOL!!! Another point to make is most people on predents have APPLIED CLOSE TO ON AVERAGE 5+ SCHOOLS!!! I am not trying to knock anyone with a great DAT score and/or GPA, in fact I am saying that puts them in front out of 15,000 applicants, but in the end, it is still a small majority. I am not trying to B.S. here, e-mail any given dental school for a copy of their admissions stats from the previous year or two, then you can make a real inference. Predents is possibly the worst place to average out the admissions stats for a given school, except for maybe schools like NYU, which have large student bodies, even then not all of the 100+ students are going to post their stats on Predents. I know a lot of schools maintain a 3.5+ and 20+AA record for previous year, but these are OVERALL AVERAGES, WHICH COME WITH DEVIATIONS, that move up and down on the set average, basically, there are some high and some lower than the set average. I am not trying to say do average, and u'll be in, but having in edge in one of the two than having none at all is good. If you cannot be SUPER GPA/SUPER DAT you would rather be SUPER GPA/AVERAGE DAT or AVERAGE GPA/SUPER DAT, rather than AVERAGE TO BELOW GPA/AVERAGE TO BELOW DAT. Which is why there are space on the application for ECs and which why schools want LORs, which are FACTORS ALSO. And again, this is my reasoning, I am not saying this is what happens, I am just basically stating from what I have learned from 3 years of lurking on SDN.

For starters you dont even take into account the thousands that are reapplying every year and improving their stats in which they were lacking. But hey! go with whatever helps you sleep better at night.:meanie: I could go ahead and counter argue on several of the points that you brought up but it has the potential to get messy so i'll just leave it at this.

ok. Who cares if someone studies for a week for DAT? I studied really hard for a long time and didn't get a score I wanted. I'm ok with that cuz I studied. Some ppl lie that they don't study and get good scores. Some ppl really dont study and get good scores. Ppl are different, so why don't we just mind our own business unless we are here to encourage or help the other predents?

I think people who have scored well already have a strong foundation in the topics since highschool. Some highschools have really good programs.

I agree... I don't give a hoot if someone studies for 2 weeks and breezes through the DAT. Personally, I'm the type of person who has to grind and struggle for each of my As. Am I going to hate on those who don't have to? Nope. If they want to flaunt it, let them... we all have different strengths and weaknesses.

Why so negative???? I believe everyone who tries their hardest has a shot. Because again more than GPA and DAT come into play with ADCOMS. I don't know what to tell you except, but I do respect everyone's opinion, as well as yours. All I am saying is don't let the stats on predents and SDN get into your head. If you deserve something, you'll get it, that's KARMA  Good luck :luck:

Mantraman,
I am hardly being negative. More realistic than anything else. EC's and LOR's come into play to SUPPLEMENT your gpa and dat scores and not compensate for them. Schools especially the selective/competitive ones could care less about your EC's/LOR's if you dont have BOTH the gpa/dat scores they are looking for. I really dont want to burst your undergraduate bubble neither your idealistic thinking and therefore choose to not further this discussion. So I will respect your opinion as well and wish you good luck.

I hate to say it but DBLDOC is right! EC/LOR are more supplemental than complemental!! that's why low gpa have to ROCK the DAT!.. me too I have to grind for my A's.. skyblue's high school comment is right on point!.. minus the ORGO and GCHEM, 50-60% of the DAT (math/sci even some PAT) can be found in MIDDLE SCHOOL science/math text books!
