I am getting my full physical today. Everytime i get a full physical or STD test or HIV test, I worry my butt off for couple days. Anyone else feel the same when you get yours?

Oh...i started this thread because I have a question. Before enrolling in medical school, every student needs to get a full physical. I was wondering..if i get a full physical now (jan 05) will it still be valid in aug05 whenthe med school requests one? My insurance covers only one physical a year so I need to know how long physicals are good for. thanks

Yep. I work with blood and always worry that somehow, despite all my precautions, I may have contracted HIV. I get tested every six months for peace of mind at Planned Parenthood. They do results in 20 minutes, and I generally have a severe panic attack during that time. One time, I even threw up after the lady told me I was okay. So yeah, other people get nervous, too.

Should be valid. Some schools require weird stuff, like certain vaccinations that you might not normally get (meningitis), but if you need to add anything on, you can just do that later. Your full physical will still be valid in August.

I haven't had a real physical in.. wow.. i can't even remember how long. My dad's a chiro and his partner has a license to do physicals, but the thing is, he's my old babysitter, so he doesn't really do one one me, just asks me a few questions and I"M outta there...what do they even do at a physicaL?

Depends on whether or not you're sexually active. If you are, be prepared to get naked and have things go inside you through your most private areas. Fingers up my butt ain't a good feeling

Does this even make sense to you?? Although physicals are one of the most traumatizing experiences out there I would much rather prefer having a thorough and "real" physical than asking a few questions and calling it good. I would honestly suggest going for a real physical in order to be a little more sure of the results.

yeah, i freak myself out as well, i call the docs office as soon as i can for the results. this past time i got checked out, i listened to my messages in front of my mother. i got a message from my physician telling me i was clean. when i hung up i was like, "yes! no STDs!!!" (not like i had much cause to worry) and my mom was shocked, she must think i'm way permiscuous!!! i'm just an tweeker.

The medical schools will probably have a form that the physician has to fill out. In that, you may have to re-up your physical come time for you to enroll in medical school. The GP probably won't want to say "okay you were healthy six months ago, you're probably healthy now."

Here are some pointers for the DRE (Digital Rectal Exam) which will be a part of your pre-matriculation physical:

1. It is not usual for the physician to finish by saying, "OK, now you do me."

2. If the physician dims the lights in the examination room, be suspicious. If he pops in a Barry White CD you should flee.

3. If during the DRE you notice both the physician's hands on your shoulders you could be in trouble.

4. If you feel violated, be assertive. Say, in your best butch voice, "Doc, you've got five minutes to get that finger out of my ass."

5. Don't cry. It only empowers the physician and makes it all the more likely that he will trade you to the Nephrologists down the hall for a carton of cigarettes.

Glad I could help.

lol.
👍

did you write the list yourself?

I think we all worry to a certain extent, especially considering the amount we read on medicine!!

As far as medicals go, although I went in March my doctors said considering I am a young man (21) as long I come to her when anything wrong, and come atleast once a year she is happy. Seems fair enough to me!

Unless you're an obese, chain-smoking porn star I don't think there's too much to worry about...

and who includes a rectal exam in a standard physical?

Um, any internist doing a physical on a male. It's right after the "turn your head and cough" part. I got one of those the last time I went. I thought my insides were crawling out or something. Geez, was that an unpleasant sensation!

Yeah, and lots of it! I'm standing there naked wiping all that gunk out of there forever.

Um, actually no since I've had several sans anal penetration and accompanying lube job.

I guess I've been getting screwed...er...shafted...

I'm not sure if I should complain, though. I might get an interesting reaction if I requested one.

In all seriousness, you will need to know your vaccination history and provide evidence. To volunteer at my university hospital, I had to do this (same for med students). For MMR, I had a titre on file for Rubella, but they still made me get titres for the other two. Turns out, I had lost protective immunity to measles, so I had to get boosted again. I also had to get titres/provide records for HepB, varicella, and tetanus. They also made me get two Tb skin tests (to make sure the first was not a false negative). It was a royal pain in the a*s, and it took me a couple of months to get sorted out. However, now all that stuff is on file! So the moral of this story is, get your immunizations in order!

Also, if you haven't had a HepB immunization yet, your are a *****. I have personally scrubbed for liver transplants in people who were <28 years old and developed acute liver failure following hepB exposure from a sexual partner. Hmmm, let's see....$60 immunization, or life long immunosuppression and chance at death? Tough choice!

Yeah, the last time I went in for a physical, the doctor said "OK, now I have to do a rectal exam." But instead of pulling out rubber gloves, he pulled out a condom, and said "wanna know what prison feels like?"

Hhehehehehehe.

Naw, the rectal exam thing (which I've always had to do at complete physicals) sucks indeed, but what is far worse, is if you are male and sexually active, and you get an STD test series: 1: they take blood for the HIV portion (no problem, except for the wait), and 2: for the syph/gon part of the test, they take a q-tip and put it in your p-hole!!! WTF!?! I havn't had one of these for a couple of years now, but I recall thinking "this isn't happening... this isn't happening..." THAT, my friends, is the scary part. I hear there is some new way to test for it, just via urine sample or something, and I will be emphatic for this method at my upcoming physical.

It's all fine unless they want to cuddle afterwards...

I think it's interesting that guys have to get violated at a regular physical, but women don't. Then I go to my gyn, get violated, but not a complete physical. Guys have one stop shopping.

Maybe it's because I'm 23 and still go to a pediatrician.

Question: I've had titers drawn twice in the last two years. Both times it showed I had no immunity to chicken pox, but I was vaccinated a while back (maybe 8 years ago). The first time I got the titer I was told by the NP that since I got vaccinated it won't show up in the titer 😕 . The second time I was told by a different NP (at a different place) that I didn't have immunity and couldn't work until I got a booster. Never got the booster, started work, though. The employee health center has forgotten about me. But which NP is right? Will I need to get a booster? Or will documentation of my vaccination history be enough? My med school requires titers.

Yeah, it's convenient.
