Hey guys I've been hearing about a separate application for applying to DO schools (AACOMAS application website). My question is - if i plan to apply this upcoming cycle to both MD and DO - do I need to apply through AAMC and AACOMAS or if i send my AAMC application can i just select the schools (DO) that i would also apply to? Thanks!

If there are separate application systems, then obviously you would need to apply to DO and MD separately. MD through AMCAS and DO through AACOMAS.

Here are the instructions for AACOMAS.

Yeah i was looking at that. But i didnt know if that was if you only wanted to apply to DO or if you apply to MD and DO (broadly) then if you would just use AAMC since it's been around longer and more common...

AMCAS and AACOMAS are very different, including Personal Statement lengths/topics and GPA calculations. This is why you have to apply through both application services.

Yeah i was reading up on it but i just thought i would ask since most of you guys have gone through the process and so you could shed some light...

Two separate applications. Biggest difference, in my opinion, is that the DO PS is 500 words shorter, so be wary of that

So if i plan on applying to both MD and DO i have to fill out the AAMC and AACOMAS application?

Yes. MD schools have nothing to do with AACOMAS, and DO schools have nothing to do with AMCAS.

You'll also have to give your letter writers two different links to submit letters. Everything is different!

As far as LORs go, you can have your professors send them to interfolio. That way when you apply you can use interfolio to send the letters straight to aacomas and amcas.

For those of you who have done the DO application cycle - just checking but the essay prompt is still the same correct? "Why you decided to go into medicine/be a doctor?" also thanks to everyone for clearing things up! Much appreciated!

You should really do research before posting questions like this. Not doing so really just comes off as lazy. You can find the answers to all your questions, even including this whole thread, with a simple Google Search or just reading the application process of MD and DO schools about AMCAS and AACOMAS.

"In the space provided write a brief statement expressing your motivation or desire to become a DO."

There are differences between the PS for both AMCAS and AACOMAS. Don't be lazy and do a copy/paste and use the same essay for both. Many adcoms will be able to tell that you used the same essay if it was generic. The length requirements are also different for the two.
