Anybody have correct anser for this question

What is the sum of all the formal charge for each atom in phosphorus oxychloride?

I got like this

P=5-1/2(10)-1/2(0)=0

O=6-1/2(4)-1/2(4)=2

Cl=7-1/2(2)-1/2(6)=3

so, sum is 5.

P bonded to 3 Cl atoms

Oxygen: 6-4-2 = 0
Phosphorus: 5-5-0 = 0
Cl = 7-6-1 = 0

sum = 0

Try it again without multiplying the nonbonding electrons by 1/2

Formal Charge = (Valence E) - 1/2(Bonding E) - (Nonbonding E)

There is an easy way to find out formal charges....
Formal Charge of any atom = Formal charge - (balls + sticks). that's it...count the number of dots + number of bonds (sticks) and that's it, that's your formal charge....EASYYYY. Try it with POCl3 and you will find that the sum = 0.
