I wonder if an administrator or a moderator would consider making this a "sticky" thread, with the link being updated upon availability of new data.

It appears one of the most frequently-started thread topics on this board involves a query along the lines, "Here Are My Grades: Do I Have a Chance"? If not on G.P.A.s, the question tends to be centered on whether a particular O.A.T. score (about which the applicant/potential-applicant is concerned) will significantly disadvantage someone's candidacy.

The worries are valid and understandable, of course, but they're all rather the same. Each seeks personalized advice that simply cannot be generated by a bunch of students and practitioners, in an on-line forum (else, just a kind, encouraging word, and maybe a shoulder to lean on, are requested; that isn't what this thread, here, is for).

Yes, contacting admissions offices of individual schools is a fine idea, but applicants sometimes are wary of doing so, for whatever reasons; perhaps they simply rather would figure through their worries either independently or within the anonymity afforded by the Internet, before speaking with a live voice.

Although I've no confidence this thread will deter a great number of such postings, I am hopeful it will help lead those in the situation to some of the answers they might desire. Below is A.S.C.O.'s (Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry) file containing the most recent statistics regarding applicants to O.D. programs.

http://www.opted.org/files/Applicant.pdf.

Numbers are given in this small, easily-intelligible document about G.P.A.s and O.A.T. scores: the two most frequent points of worry applicants share.

Even if you do feel compelled to start your own thread about your particular predicament, I suggest you scan the above-cited link. Keep in mind when asking others for their guidance that, unless the person is directly and currently involved at the admissions level of an optometry college, her advice — be she a doctor, a professor, or a student — shouldn't be associated by you with any finality. Many of the replies one encounters — "Of course, you can do it; worse numbers have been tolerated," "No, those stats could never cut it, and they never should" — are simply guesses or over-strong opinions. Trust the numbers (A.S.C.O. is a realiable organization for this stuff) more than you rely on the words of strangers on the Web.

Good luck.

Thanks Commando!

Normally, I wouldn't expect an an optometry student to help pre-optometry students with their application. Appreciate it.
