Hi guys,

So I'm a second semester senior and I'm going to be applying to dental schools this summer. I'm really concerned that my extracurriculars are lacking. I've sufficient shadowing but I haven't been too active in doing volunteering and getting leadership experience until the past two years.

My GPA and DAT are fine. I can't improve on my academic elements so I think a masters or SMP is off the table. What do you think would be the best thing for me to do during my gap year? I took the DATs last summer so they're going to expire after two application cycles. What's the best thing I could do during my gap year so that if I don't get in next cycle, I show the most improvement in getting in the cycle after that?

Thanks for your help!

if your GPA and more importantly DAT cannot be improved, accompanied with a sufficient amount (~100 seems good im my opinion) and a June first application, i see no reason why you shouldnt land some interviews.

I would enjoy your year off, find a nice job to get some cash, do some light shadowing / volunteering perhaps, i like the idea of volunteering as a dental assistant or in a dental lab where you can learn labwork and develop your hands / knowledge, and more important enjoy yourself. as long as you can cite some things that YOU enjoy doing, not including video games and media, it isnt time wasted. also have the chance to do travelling with some of the money you make.

I did have some EC's but not a ton. I would definitely say it's way more important to have dental shadowing time. If you have done some stuff outside of school, have 100 hours of shadowing, and good DAT and grade stats, you're probably set to be accepted somewhere (hopefully).
