I am currently a senior planning to take a gap year and apply in the 2019-2020 cycle. My undergrad GPA is around a 3.2, so I am planning to do a post-bacc/SMP during my gap year to get my GPA up. But, if I am applying next summer before I start my gap year, will my gap year GPA not be taken into account for my application? Do I need to take 2 gap years so that my graduate GPA will be included in my application or is there a way to do it with only one gap year?

1) if you have a 3.2, applying in near suicidal without post/SMP work
2) you need to complete a year of postbacc/SMP before you can apply
3) you will need to take 2 gap years at least
4) it took you 4 years of college to dig this 3.2 hole so it may take 2-3-4 years to dig back out
4) is your concern “wasting a year” or getting into medical school?
5) you also need to ace the MCAT and preparing for that while also acing postbacc/SMP is a tall order
6) you also need to write a highly polished AMCAS and 10-15-20 or more secondary applications

Instead of planning your application timing based on your desires, let your postbacc grades and MCAT dictate it. You have already dug yourself a deep hole; dont start digging another one

Read this, and apply when you have the best possible app.
