I'm a current senior about to graduate and I am hoping to get some advice on how to improve my chances to get into medical school. I would prefer an MD program, but am open to DO. I am a white male from NY. Went to a top public university in CA. MCB-biochem major with Nutritional Science minor. cGPA/sGPA both about 3.45. I scored a 508 MCAT last summer (127/124/127/130). ECs include neuropsych lab for 2 years, campus health worker 1 year, public health coordinator and VP of medical service club for 1 year of each position, local hospital/nursing home community service for 100 hours, shadowing several doctors for 50 hours.
I am planning on taking 2-3 years off after I graduate. I'm not sure if working in a lab/hospital during that time would be best or if I should consider a postbacc/masters program to improve my GPA. I am definitely planning on retaking my MCAT at some point, especially with my cars score. With my current resume, I am hoping I can get some advice on what I should focus on during my gap years. My goal is to get into an MD program in NY. Thanks!
If you are from New York, I would need a refresher on your residency status in NY to become a better strategic fit with NY state medical schools (MD or DO). Your GPA should make you open to DO programs in general, but I think if you submit an early application and improve a bit on the MCAT, you might be fine in the end. You may not be among those who are interviewed early, but with persistence and a proper early application, I think you have a good shot.
