I am a senior graduating in less than a month and after blindly applying to around 30-40 Research Assistant positions around the country for my gap year, I am finally hearing back from different programs. I was just accepted to a summer internship with the US Army Medical Research wing at Ft. Sam Houston performing surgical technique and military trauma research. However, I have also received phone interviews from neuroscience labs at Cornell and Ohio State. My undergrad research experience is actually in molecular biology, but apparently these labs see something in my resume to give me a shot. The PIs for these labs said they wouldn't follow up with me until later this week, but the Army wants my acceptance by Monday. I feel stuck since I am grateful for the great opportunity to work developing military techniques but at the expense of losing an opportunity to work at Cornell for a year or two. But nothing with these two academic interviews is guaranteed. I would still have to go through the second round of in-person interviews. Also taking the summer internship would throw off my plans for applying this summer's cycle because I would have to find another position in the fall and most RA positions would not let me work for ~ 10 months and then leaving for med school. Just looking for input from anyone who has done research full-time in their gap year and would be able to advise which would be the best going forward this next year.
