I am planning on working as a clinical research coordinator during my gap year while apply for medical school during this cycle. I am a Virginia resident and plan on working in Maryland. Does anyone know if that will affect my instate status in Virginia?

No

It shouldn't affect in-state status unless you move to Maryland and change your state of residency/address.

Not sure on the specifics on Virginia state laws on residency placement (same with Maryland,) but you have to intentionally try to "switch" your residency to Maryland. Buy new MD plate tags, get a MD state driver's license, pay MD state taxes; and then fill out paperwork with documented proof that you have lived in the state for X amount of months/years with a permanent residence in the state, all-the-while providing evidence that "you want to live there." Via what I mentioned above.
