I'm curious to see what various routes that people took during their time off. So I have three questions:

So, what did you do? Why you did it? And did it help get you in?

Thanks!

You should check out the threads right on the bottom of this page. Lots of old threads that are still valid.

Pursuing healthcare economics is a great idea for the financially inclined majors and nontrads (shout out to @panda16 and @md-2020), who can address pressing issues (i.e. will Obamacare destroy the American healthcare system???) I explored this personally when studying insurance markets in an economics class.

More commonly OP, the standard gap year route is to fix your weaknesses and/or explore your interests a bit more. And enjoy life along the way. Research is pretty common, though people do outreach work as well.

what - 1: worked part time in a clinical setting, 2: drank alot with my friends.

why - 1: clinical experience is good, 2: and so is drinking with your friends.

did it help - 1: clinical experience always helps, 2: and drinking kept me sane.

I also volunteered some as a tutor - meh

I did unpaid research in Radiation Oncology at a med school and volunteered+shadowed with some doctors
I wanted to get experience in the field, both in the research side, and in the side of .. the practice (how's the patient interaction, how the machines work, etc)
Certainly gave me something to talk about during the interviews ! It was definitely an eye opening experience 🙂
