I'm considering taking a gap year between undergrad and optometry school..... I currently have a pretty low GPA so I am having to work really hard to get all A's and I am supposed to take the OAT in August. Unfortunately I'm in 4 summer classes and about to start a new position as an optometry tech, leaving me very little free time for studying for the OAT. I'm thinking of just focusing on what I have going on and then giving myself a year off to catch up on OAT studying, shadowing and all the other things I need to get in order. Has anyone on here taken a gap year?? Would you recommend??? Will a gap year hinder my chances of getting in?? I need any and all advice pleaseee.

A gap year wont negatively impact you at all. Depending on your stats You could probably apply between september-december and still get in for class of 2024. I didnt take my oat till november and schools told me I was still early in the cycle. But again, depends on your stats and experience

Gap year is typically a good thing, since people tend to gain work experience during that time. I took one and highly recommend it.

I took a year off between my undergraduate and applying for optometry school. I was accepted into all of the schools I applied to and in none of my interviews was I asked why I took a year off. I recommend it because I did quite a bit in my year off and had loads to talk about in interviews !
