I will be graduating from undergrad this fall of 2019. I plan to take a gap year and apply for fall 2021 so I can retake my MCAT and continue to work. I have been in research for 3 years and plan to finish my last project around the same time I graduate. I have also been a medical scribe for almost 2 years. My plan was to graduate in December and begin to study for the MCAT, planning to take it April, while continuing to work at the hospital. I will be moving during the summer of 2020 and I am not sure there is a hospital where I am moving that has scribes. If there is not, would it be detrimental to my application if I worked at a job that was not in the medical field while continuing to volunteer in the medical field? Any advice on how to make the most of my gap year would be appreciated! Besides my MCAT, I have a pretty strong application.

It would not be detrimental to your app to work in a non medical job. You have a lot of time between now and then. If there aren’t scribe jobs you could also consider a technician/EMS/phlebotomy in a hospital or outpatient clinic.

Working full time + MCAT studying is a bad combination. Your ECs and work experience are solid, doing more will not get you into medical school. If you are retaking your MCAT, it may involve (if you can financially afford) not working. Spend 3 months or more preparing for your MCAT. Get a very competitive score. Scribe 24/7 or build a damn hospital with the remainder of your time.
