Anyone know if there are dental schools that offer research assistant positions (referably paid) to pre-dents in their gap year? I've been scouring employment websites, and there aren't many opportunities and the ones that are available require a 2 year committment. Is it a bad idea to personally contact school faculty to seek out positions that might not be posted?

I doubt you'll find anything formal on a dental school website. I stumbled upon an RA position through my pre-dent club for my gap year. My advice would be to go try to find a list of prof's who are active in research, and email them to ask if they would have any spots. It's a longshot, and you're chances of finding something on a volunteer basis this way would be much higher, but its worth a shot! And no, I don't think this would adversely affect your application in any way, unless you pester them about it. The worst they can do is say no or ignore the email.
