For those of you currently applying and/or building up your CV's, how critical is it to have research in the field to match at your top choices. For those of you who did/are doing research, what kinds of topics/subjects (if you don't mind helping the clueless when it comes to research) are you investigating. What are some of the "hot" topics for research in gas right now? Is it expecting too much to start a research project and be published within a year? Thanks for the help in advance. Sorry for the length of the question!

I think it is less important in anesthesia compared to other fields. I have no research and so far I have gotten interviews at just about every place I have applied assuming they have started sending out interviews. The one exception is MGH which has yet to give me any love but this is not a major suprise.

what I meant by my previous post is that unlike some other fields were research is essentially required (ie derm) reserach will always be considered benifical to your application in anesth. but it is far from crucial. The best way to think about it is having it will make a weak applicant stronger but not having it will not hurt a strong applicant much. I hope this helps.

IVDOC, would you mind sharing maybe your Step scores. It might have been that you were outstanding enough not to need to do research. Is there anyone else out there that would comment on the question? Any help would be appreciated!

I'll echo IVdoc. Gas is more popular than some years ago. However, there are still over 1000 spots nationally. There are 16000 US med students.
This is not derm or ophtho.

Everyone should find a spot unless they have a glaring deficit or do not apply and rank reasonably.

I have done absoltely NO research (and don't plan to because I have absolutely no interest!) and have gotten interviews from 8 out of the 20 programs I have applied to so far (no rejections....yet) and trust me, I am a very mediocore student (about 50% of my class and my step1 score was 220 (just above average) So...no you don't need research, but if you are interested in it, I guess it can only help! Good luck!

I take it by the response, there are not many people on this board going into gas taht did research.

there are well over 1000 spots. however, many of those spots are in sh1tsville, usa or undesirable institutions - so if you don't mind living somewhere for 3 years you WILL match in anes.

however, if you would like an education at a desirable institution in a desirable location, the stakes are up. yea, i know people with crap for numbers that have matched at penn cause they did an away there, or at mount sinai or at columbia, but...

when the strong programs are choosing applicants (and most strong programs are academic) and they have a pile of 200 applications all with 230+ boards and top 50% grades and a load of honors in everything and nice letters from chairmen and have only 15 spots to fill, they're gonna pay attention to the other pertinent details of the application...ie, research, extracurrics, volunteer, etc.

so, if you just wanna match, you don't need to do anything but apply, seriously. if you're an AMG, passed med school and the boards and have some letters, you'll get in (there are dozens of spots still unfilled every match). however, if you want to get into an upper tier program in a particular location, you'll need all the help you can get. all you have to do if figure out what what you want to do and go from there.

rule of thumb, it never hurts you to do more to build your application.
