Is gastroenterology a general surgery specialty? What classification do surgeons who conduct gastric bypasses/lap band surgeries (and procedures involving the digestive system) fall under?

NO, gastroenterology is a subspecialty of internal medicine.

The types of procedures you describe are generally performed by surgeons without fellowship trianing, or with one in Minimally Invasive Surgery (aka laparoscopic)

Like Rich said, Gastroenterology is an IM subspecialty. You complete 3 years of internal medicine and 3 years of followship in gastroenterology/heptology to get there. Gastric bypass/lap band procedures are normally performed by general surgeons often with fellowships in bariatric surgery.

Very helpful, thanks.
