Gays in Optometry?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just curious as to how many gays there are out there going to optometry school... and just about how accepting/open you all are. 😍

i love gay people!!! and I am a straight girl! I would love to be friends with them 🙂 I really want gay friends, they are fun and kind, and easy to rely on.

I made a lot of gay friends in undergrad. They're like anyone else. I don't want to make any generalizations, but most of my gay friends are nicer than a lot of straight guys I've met.

Seems like Western has a club on campus that supports gay/lesbian/bi-sexual/transgender faculty/staff and students. It's called the Lambda and Friends

I'm a lesbian and I'm going to either Nova or Berkeley (pending word on Berkeley's acceptances lol). I have a feeling level of acceptance depends on which school you attend. In general though I felt very welcomed at all of the schools where I interviewed.

Thanks for the reply everyone. I'll be attending SUNY. Any idea what it's like there?

There is like one flamboyant/openly gay guy per class here. There might be more but they are not detectable to me. Plus, NYC and Cali are pretty gay friendly. But at the same time not opto friendly. So win/lose.

Meh, I don't really care whether you are gay or straight, as long as you are cool

South Florida has a huge gay population, so I wouldn't expect that you'll run into any problems

One of the optometrists I shadowed with is gay. He's absolutely hilarious and his patients love him. Only gay man I know in optometry though.

I think you will be fine. Like Shnurek stated above, NYC is definately pretty gay friendly. A good doctor is a good doctor, period. Doesnt matter what your personal preferences are like. Of course im sure wherever you go you will run into the one or two obligatory jerks, but hey, thats life.

I wonder how I'll respond to patients who ask about my family or "wife" which I probably won't have.

I wouldn't worry about it. At OSU we have one or two openly (or obviously) gay students, but it's not something that anyone really cares about. The way I see it, most people in this field are professional enough to keep their opinions to themselves or accepting enough to just not give a damn. As far as patients go, I wouldn't worry. Every patient is different.

My Optometrist I used to go to is gay. He was a cool dude!

Hey dkny,
I'm a first year optom at waterloo and there are three of us in our class and more in the upper years. Don't worry about it. Everyone is supportive and welcoming. Good luck!

More in the upper years? Damn I really do have no gaydar whatsoever.

Wouldn't it be cool to have a LGBT optometrists summit/meeting?
