Would it be academic suicide to take gen chem II in a 6 week period while taking bio II in 12 weeks for Summer? (meaning 6 weeks only bio 6 weeks both). This includes of course their respective labs (2 chem labs /week, 1 bio lab/week). Is chem II that much harder than chem 1 and is this doable? I should 99.99% have an A in chem 1 and bio 1 this term. Please give me some insight more experienced SDN gods

No, if anything it will prepare you for having multiple upper level sciences classes at the same time. I'm sure having multiple lab write-ups every week will get old though.

One of my rules to students is dont risk bad grades by taking too much. This compounded that taking too much can affect your grades across all the classes, not just one. Med schools care about what you did and not what you tried to do. And in the summer , if you miss a weekend of studying (maybe to the beach or a party), you have no buffer to make it up. I think with lab it is a stretch and you might overburden. You also have the issue of some med schools frowning upon summer classes which posted several med schools and prehealth opinions on this (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/science-course-over-summer.1063574/#post-15086910)

I think the risks factors lean against and I would do the bio only

I don't disagree with you about it maybe being an overburden, but I still think it's a good learning experience. My sophmore year was a real shocker for me. The first semester I had my first upper level science class (ochem). Then, the second semester I had 4 of them, 3 of them (Ochem 2, Genetics, and Biochem) with lab. It would have been nice to gradually ramp of my course load but that wasn't an option. Considering that Bio 2 usually isn't harder than Bio 1, just different (at my school bio 1 was organismal biology and bio 2 was cells & genetics) OP should be able to handle Bio 2 easily in the summer session given his grade in Bio 1. However, Gen chem 2 is harder than gen chem 1, so it's really up to the OP if he/she thinks he can handle it. Although the classes are more condensed it's definitely easier to to focus on 1 or 2 classes, at least it was for me when I took two summers of classes. Sure, taking multiple prereqs in the summer might look like someone is trying to lighten their class load, but if they back it up with a semester or two full of hard classes, I think that negates any doubts.

With all that said, OP if you're a freshman and you've taken a full load each of your first semesters, there's no reason to rush through prereqs unless you're trying to double major or graduate early.

I actually prefer summer courses because you're forced to stay on top of your work.

Don't underestimate the time needed to comprehend chem II. It's pretty dense and only doable when you can do practice problems out the wazoo.

If it was me, I'd keep away from doubling up like that in 6 weeks with a 10 ft pole.

Agreed with doc. Chem two totally blows and is really time consuming. I couldn't imagine finishing in 6 weeks and with another class added on top of that. If you can handle that load then go for it. Otherwise, maybe just take that course only over the summer or take it in the fall over a traditional 15 week schedule.

Thanks everyone these are some really good suggestions and u all have a point. I plan on applying the 2016 cycle and if I don't take chem2 in the summer I'll be pretty backed up. Up against a wall. You all have a great point now I'm starting to doubt whether I should...

As long as it's not your GPA it's a good experience...
