Where does a general surgeon work after completing residency? Do they usually work in a hospital all the time or for some firm or clinic and only go to the hospital for surgery and to check up on patients? Also, on days off would they be allowed to do a shift in the ED for some extra money?

Most general surgeons will join a group practice with other surgeons, and have privileges at a couple or three hospitals. Surgeons in general spend a lot of time in the hospital, since that's where the ORs are. And a surgeon makes his money by performing surgery. The office practice is just to support the surgery, really.

Unless the local ER has the volume to support an in-house trauma surgeon all the time, general surgeons will generally not be allowed to work in the ER (unless you live somewhere really rural where you may be one of only a few doctors in the area anyway).
