If you need:

👍 **The Official Personal Statement Guide** Often you need to PM these people directly. When I was editing I would respond with my email address so people could send it. Some people want you to put it in the PM. Whatever you do, thank your editor.
*Should I talk about the fact that I'm gay in my PS? (Credit: GoodDoctor) IF you wanna read the rest of that thread, click on the thread title in the upper-right hand corner.

👍 *^~*~^* The Official What Are My Chances/Where to Apply Thread AKA: Can I get into Georgetown with my 3.7 and 38 MCAT? What schools should I drop? How many schools should I apply to? It helps if you have an mdapplicants profile, so people can see what state you're in, where you went to school, etc. You can sign up for one at www.mdapplicants.com.

👍 To know what the 2007 Secondary Essay Prompts are. Alternately, you can PM people that you know have them. If you "know" the person. You can get to know more people here.

👍 To know how long it is taking people who have submitted their AMCAS to get verified

👍 To know what schools have sent out email invitations to secondary, posted secondaries online for everyone, or are sending out screening notices

👍 What to wear on interview day

👍 Help using SDN's search tools (Well, when search is working anyhow.)

👍 To find someone who got into the school you want to, or want to check up on the class of 2010 ('06 successful applicants).

👍 Information on Applicants, Matriculants and Graduates by Race, Sex, State.

👍 How do I handle a troll?

General AMCAS Info:
1. AMCAS is NOT going to let you indent your personal statement. This is normal. You don't indent. It doesn't let you. Don't waste your spaces trying to space bar it out. This will look funny on the PDF version* of your application. Hit return twice. Also: If you cut and paste from MS Word, you're going to get a lot of funny symbols and crap. This is true for some secondaries, too. Use notepad, or be old-school and retype it in there.

*You can print your application by going to the main menu and selecting print application. This PDF will also tell you on what day and at what time you submitted, and then when you are verified. You will get an email when you're verified. Once you're verified (not before) you can see your GPAs as calculated by AMCAS on your PDF.

2. For those pesky "What course gets designated as what?" questions, check the HELP menu on AMCAS. Copy it and paste it into a word document. They have a whole list of what courses go under what designation. The more compliant your application is, the easier (and quicker) it is for them to process. It doesn't matter that Biochemistry was out of the biology department for your school, for example. AMCAS wants it listed as CHEM. Why argue with these people?*

*also: Don't put stuff on your AMCAS that is not on your transcript. The admin verifying your app doesn't know that your class had a special name. Also request an official transcript to work from (YES, for YOU!) as your school may list more complete info on it. Do this when you're requesting the initial transcripts be sent.

3. For payment, AMCAS doesn't accept credit cards other than Mastercard or Visa. Sorry, AMEX. I know, I wanted to use mine, too.

4. After you're verified, you can add more schools if you need to..but you can't remove schools! Sorry! Submit is forever, people.

5. Make sure the email you gave as your contact information is the email you're checking for secondaries. TIP! I made a new gmail account just for applications, and downloaded Gmail Notifier. This way, I know if something comes into my "special" medschool account. And since that email isn't anywhere else, it doesn't freak me out with SPAM!

6. Get those transcripts sent to AMCAS as soon as possible. You'll get an email when they get them--you don't have to have submitted yet. They cannot verify you without your transcripts, and if you hit submit before they have them, you will basically be ON HOLD until they do.

What is Interfolio?

If your school doesn't offer a committee letter (if it does, USE IT!) or a letter service (often times if you are a grad they won't let you do it), it would help you (and your writers) to make an Interfolio account.

1. www.interfolio.com is the official website. You can create a one-year account for $15. If you need it for longer, you can renew it.

2. To set up your account, you just have to "Add documents" and you create a unique name for each document (i.e. Prof Jones Med School LOR), and Interfolio will give you a special page to give to the professors. This special page has a barcode and a special code and they need the author to include this document with your letter so they can match it. The barcode page also indicates if you have a CLOSED file (Waived right of access) or not.

3. When Interfolio gets a letter from a writer, they email you. (Hint:Use the same email you gave AMCAS to save yourself confusion!)

4. When one or more letters are in, you can send them in a packet to your schools. The pricing starts at $4 for electronic delivery (only certain schools) or $5 for US Mail. It goes up to $40 for next-day service.

5. The letters* are sent with a cover page that has your SSN and AMCAS ID, so make sure you give those to Interfolio when you sign up.

*When you are creating deliveries of letters, it is ONE PRICE (the $4 or the $5) for all of your letters (up to 20 pages). So if you have five letters, two pages each (10 pages total), Interfolio will send them all together with your cover sheet to your schools.

6. Any more questions about Interfolio they have an amazing HELP section on the site and are very responsive to Q's.

TIP! Even if you have had your letters sent individually by the professors, I would recommend that you set up an interfolio account as a BACKUP so when schools misplace or do not receive letters (Think about it: 3 profs times 15 schools times all of those files at the schools...) you can dispatch them electronically or next day to become complete. Put it to the professors like this: if they fax in your letter with the special interfolio page, you won't have to bother them every time a school misfiles something.

Jackie, you rock my world. 😛 This is a great idea for all the different questions that have been coming up around SDN. I may find a few things to add to your list.

For the course listing, do we write the course as it appears on our transcript? b/c my school has a different name for the class listed. For example english 101 is writing and rhetoric workshop I, but enlgish 101 is what appears on the transcript. Will amcas get confused?

Also the course number, do they want the section number like 101-001. or just 101?

I was reading the help stuff, and it says to add "and Lab" to any course with a lab included...I think I was reading it right. that wouldve been something I would have never done if I hadnt come across it...so does anyone have any other tidbits for the whole application?

Thanks!! 🙂

So, on your transcript, all you see is English 101, a grade, and number of credits? I would expect something like this, based on your description:

Course # Course Listing Grade Credits
ENGL101 Writing and Rhetoric Workshop I A 3.0

For me, I put ENGL as the designation, 101 as the number and Writing and Rhetoric Workshop I or English 101 as the title, depending on what's on the transcript. Remember that AMCAS can only verify what is ON THE TRANSCRIPT so make it match the best you can. My official transcript has different information than the unofficials from my school, so make sure you have your official transcript.

Thanks for the links. They are really helpful!

Here's my input:
- If you took Dual Enrollment classes while in HS, you should put "High School" as "year in school" and the year you took the class as "academic year." Also, you need to request a transcript from the institution you took the classes and add that college to "schools attended".
- If you are on a quarter system as opposed to semester, put 1.0 as your course credit (that's what's listed on my transcript and what our advisor told us; apparently AMCAS will do the x2.7 or whatever conversion for you)
- For transfer credits, either put T or leave the grade blank
- Remember to put in future courses; although they may change, they will count if you still need to take Biochemistry or complete that one year of English/writing that some schools require

And here are my questions:
- I know you consider AP credits Freshman for "year in school." But what "academic year" and "academic term" do you put for AP credits? 2004 (that's my freshman year) 1st quarter (this is what's listed on my transcript) or 2003 (my last year in HS) full year (this is what FSM admission said) or the year you took the test (this is what would make sense)?
- If I practiced tae kwon do for the past 2 years in school but did not get a belt (thought they were too expensive -_-), should I still put that down as an activity knowing my interviewer will mostly likely ask what belt I had?
- What scholarship is "significant"? Do National Merit or Dean's List count?
- Jackie, are you suggesting we should double space every time we begin a new paragraph? My PS has 14 paragraphs and it looks really messy with no indent or spacing.

I hope this would clarify more questions about the AMCAS application. Thanks in advance for replying to my questions. I'm trying to get it out by first week of July.

dantt said:
Do people actually put Dean's list?? That's kind of weak . . .

You know...I didn't bother including anything like this, because I figured I would let my performance speak for itself...we'll see if that comes back to bite me in the a$$!

black_wind said:

I put Nat'l Merit but not deans list - obviously if you have a decent GPA you made dean's list at least a few times.
I got a couple other competitive scholarships - I listed those two within the line for Nat'l Merit.

On the belt question - I would list it if you need something to help round you out. You already have the answer to your interviewers question - so why not. If you are already heavy on the hobbies though - skip it.

My litmus test for stuff like this was "do I enjoy discussing this activity" and "can I relate it to why I want to practice medicine". Of course, what do I know? - I haven't even have my AMCAS verified yet!!!

black_wind said:

For AP question - I put it in as Fall semester of my freshman year and used that as the academic year.

I'm always skipping a line for a new paragraph. Since you can't indent, that's the only way to break up space. Try reading your PS without the space between and then with the space between and you'll notice that the one with is much easier to read since it's not a giant block of text.

I will say it again. What you need is an OFFICIAL transcript. This is what AMCAS is going to get. Order it ASAP (RUSH it if you have to), break the seals, and make your record match exactly.

There were a lot of things missing from my unofficials that were on my officials, like my time at a community college in HS and some complicated course titles. :luck:

Agree with Jackie - head over to the registrar's office ASAP (or fax if you are not within driving distance), and request a copy of your official transcript. There should be no problem with requesting one for yourself...they typically throw a stamp on it that states the transcript was issued to you.

I think it would be worthwhile to ensure your AMCAS app is correct.

sooo i have a manuscript that was submitted for publication. How should i put that in mywork/experince?? thanks for the help

You should include an exact (correct) citation, and then you should also briefly describe your work on the publication (if you describe the research elsewhere...I assume you would have another activity for that one). Here's how I referenced mine:

Me, Other Author, Other Author; This is the best darn paper ever written. Super Science Journal (2006) Immediate Publication, doi:123.456/AB08098111.
As first author of this manuscript, I performed most of the blah blah specific testing and data analysis, and I wrote a significant amount of the final manuscript.

On Interviewing:
law2doc said:
The biggest interview mistakes tend to be:
(1) not having a good answer for "why medicine", or simply falling back on the cliche of wanting to "help people". Similarly, doing it for money, prestige, parent influences or other superficial reasons is a no-no
(2) not having a good answer for "why this school"; Telling them you want that school because it is in a particular city is not a good answer.
(3) Coming off as not well thought out.
(4) Coming off as immature
(5) Not being responsive, and having the interviewer feel like s/he is pulling teeth to get you to talk.
(6) Being to arrogant, or giving off an air of entitlement,
(7) Not having any questions to ask -- it suggests disinterest.
(8) Not being nice and professional toward non-interviewer admissions staff, secretaries, student tour guides, student hosts, etc.
(9) Not looking professional -- this is not the time to take fashion risks.

A class was listed as "IN PROGRESS" and now postsubmission the summer I grades are out, do I send the transcript to the application service (AMCAS/TMDSAS/AACOMAS) or directly to the school?

This sucks if I have to spend $10 for a transcript every semester x3 for each service. :meanie:

Hmmmm....good question. I am not sure what current students are supposed to do. Did you check the HELP section on AMCAS? I know it covers what you are supposed to do. You could also call them and find out. :luck:

Here is what they said:
TMDSAS -> Send (updated) transcripts to them directly
[source: the service themselves]

AMCAS -> Send (updated) transcripts to them directly
[source -> Baylor COM Office of Admissions]

AACOMAS -> Send (updated) transcripts to them directly
[source -> DMU COM Office of Admissions]

I hope this is right. It'd suck having to send a transcript directly to each school I'm applying to. I understand though, that once you matriculate to a particular school you need to send them transcripts directly.

-so classes I'm enrolled in I should also include on amcas?

-so the trancscript I only need to send into AMCAS people not the schools correct? should I send in my transcript anyways even though I have yet to finish my application?

-for the activities, how much should I be writing? should it be concise or very detailed? I was trying to do bullets but it doesnt come out right

Hey everyone,

If you go to page one, I updated our FAQ with a link to the data from the AAMC on applicants/matriculants in 2005. You can check out these tables.

For whateva07, first two questions, yes. For the activities you can't do bullet points. Write short, concise sentences.

Stupid question for ya guys, but what is TMDSAS? Also I want to apply to a few osteopathic schools, should I also be finishing up the application for that this summer or is it ok to wait for that?

TMDSAS = Texas Medical and Dental School Application Service. You only need to fill it out if you are applying to schools in Texas (except for Baylor, which uses AMCAS).

If you want to apply osteopathic, I believe you need a recommendation from an osteopathic doctor. I'm not sure about that though.

Is that a requirement, because I definately do not have one.
