elastic collision is when the 2 gas particles hit each other but dont lose any energy from hitting each other and bounce right back and move at the speed they were going at before. they dont slow down. this is what happens in an ideal gas. in a real gas (or non ideal gas) the collisions are inelastic so they lose energy when they bang into each other and they slow down.
