For those of you guys who have taken the DAT. Does the Gen chem section have a lot of calculations that are time consuming? I mean more like the calculation part itself!!! Do they give numbers that are easy to work with or did some of the question require doing multiplication of large numbers? And were majority of the questions calculation based or conceptual? I am aware that you are supposed to know how to approximate logs and all the jazz but I was just wandering about time since no calculator is available for this section.
Thanks!

They are most of the time quick. I had one that had me figure out the specific rate constant then I had to plug in numbers again to find the rate for a specific reaction. That one took the longest.
The numbers are real easy. I had two questions I had to use the Henderson-hasselbach as well. You have to prepare for everything but the numbers will be nicer than the Destroyer or DBC. But in case the numbers aren't good, you should be able to tackle them anyways since you've done the destroyer and DBC

Hi Ashish,

Like @Likkriue mentioned, the calculations are not bad at all. Most of the cases simply have the numbers together in conversion factor/dimensional analysis form i.e. you do not need to calculate a specific final answer.

Example, if I ask you to convert 10 ft to inches, the correct answer would be:

(10)*(12)/(1)

120 would not be an answer choice, but the above would be. I hope this helps.

P.S.- I took my DAT already...if you ever have any more questions, feel free to PM. Never too busy to help someone out.

Hey thank you guys for the replies. Makes me feel better knowing that the calculations are easier than the DAT Destroyer.

A good of thumb I give to my classroom students is to put everything into scientific notation then try to cancel out and simplify until you get to the final answer. The general chemistry section on the DAT involves very simple math.
