I have a few questions about UMass's Med School, so if anyone can help, that would be great! 🙂

1. I'm worried that since it is a state school, it is looked down upon, especially in a state that also houses Harvard, Tufts, and BU. 🙄 Is it?

2. I know that it is well known for producing primary care physicians, but do you think that they could match someone for a residency in anesthesiology?

3. Money is a huge issue for me, which is the main reason I'm considering Umass for after my bachelor's. . . . Do they accept a lot of people from Umass (the undergrad schools)?

4. Has anyone heard anything else that stands out, either good or bad, about umass med?

Thanks soooooooooo much!!!!!!! Have a good weekend!

ive heard that its an excellent school with excellent resources. It certainly compares to Tufts and BU and has plenty of money. Most schools will be able to pair you up with what you want, as long as you do well enough. But lets just be realistic. 90% of people change their minds about what they want to do, i wouldn't worry

UMass has a good reputation (I live in New England).

The downside? It's in Massachusetts...

What's that supposed to mean?! 😕

It means I want to throw fists with the drivers from Mass who come to my state and terrorize my roadways...and purchase all of our beer at low, low prices...

:beat:

1. As a current MS1, I don't think it's looked down upon. I mean, Harvard is Harvard. Outside the medical world, people miiight think less of it since it doesn't have quite the name recognition as BU or Tufts, but it's an awesome school.

2. People have matched into ortho, anesthesiology, radiology, etc. and at great hospitals like MGH. Bottom line, the school doesn't limit you. It all comes down to what you want to do. Maybe where the primary care focus comes into play in first year is learning how to interview patients from the start of school, but I don't think that's unique to UMass.

3. There are a few people here from UMass undergrad...I don't think they're given preference. Given that the only people who can go to UMass Med are Massachusetts residents (unless you go MD/PhD), it's not surprising that the Massachusetts-based schools are represented here as well (e.g., UMass, Harvard, MIT, Holy Cross).

4. What I love most about the school are the people. Granted, we just started 6 weeks ago, but the class has been great and incredibly helpful and supportive. This can't be emphasized enough since there's only ~100 of us and you see everyone practically all the time.

As with med school in general, it's a lot of work hard play hard. Worcester isn't Boston or New York, but most of the time we're in school or studying. If you get an interview here, stop any student and ask them how they like UMass. That'll give you a good indication. Everyone I talked to when I was applying said they loved it here and that eased my hesitation with moving from a city to the middle of fcking Massachusetts.

oh, and the cheap tuition doesn't hurt either 🙂.
