Haven't found anything through searching, hoped you all could help. I'm curious as to how med school is actually organized, I have seen all the talk Herr and on school websites about curriculum and matching and residencies, but nothing that puts it all together. Here is what I've gathered, if you could let me know what I have wrong I'd appreciate it!

Years 1 and 2 are pretty much classroom learning and don't vary much from school to school.

Years 3 and 4 involve clerkships, or rotations, which are blocks of time you spend learning a particular specialty, such ad OB/GYN, or IM. And these take place at hospitals the school is associated with? And you use this time to figure out which specialty you'd like to be in?

When you're in the fourth year (I'm guessing), you look around the country to see what hospitals have open spots in your chosen specialty, and apply for them. Then you are "matched" to the hospital. Then you are an intern, then resident, and attending?

Is this how it generally goes?

Cool, thanks.

Leadimg on from that, do interns typically stay at the hospital they were matched to, or do they leave to become residents elsewhere? Does anyone bother keeping statistics on this kind of thing?

It depends on the specialty. Some specialties have a separate intern year (a transitional or prelim year), while others do not. If you have a separate intern year, it is common to go somewhere else after that year. For integrated residencies, people typically complete the entire residency in one place.
