Hi, I'm very interested in learning about the brain, so I thought that neurology would be the thing for me. But after talking to a few people, they said that:
1. just because you like learning about the brain, it doesn't mean you'll like neurology.
2. to go into something else because neuro doesn't make as much money as others.

If neuro isn't for people who like brains, then what is?! And also, do neurologists earn enough money to buy a big house and Mercedes E-Class (about 50k)? I know it's dumb but I'm a materialistic person, and since I will spend X money on med school, I want to make sure that the job I do will pay off given the hardwork and money I'll put in.

Any help is appreciated. THANKS!!

I think the first one is obvious. It's analogous to the fact that even if you like science, you might not want to be a doctor. You not only have to like learning about the brain, you have to enjoy treating people with diseases of the nervous system.

The second one is less straightforward. Neurologists are paid better than most people in general practice, but less than many other specialists. However, there is a huge range of salaries in neurology depending on location, subspecialization, academic versus private arena, patient load, and many other factors. Check out some old threads for discussion on salary. It's been discussed plenty. Really, though, with smart financial planning and no extenuating life circumstances, any doctor should be able to buy a fancy car if that's what they want.

I believe not too long ago I pointed out how often this is brought up on web forums like this. Was it just my imagination, or are people really that superficial when choosing a specialty?

Nope they(we) really are, and they(we) are even admitting it. I would rather them(us) admit it than ask about salary and act like they(we) aren't superficial. Just my preference. But what you pointed out is true.
