Hey Everyone,

To those of you who worry that your stats aren't good enough, I'm a success story that you should say that you can do it from: 3.0 GPA overall (2.9 BCPM); 30 MCAT; research exp.

I'm in a situation which isn't bad at all; but its definitely put me on the spot. I applied to MD/DO/IM programs this year. So far, I've been accepted to a DO school, and Ross University in Dominica, and have an MD interview in a few weeks. If I get the domestic MD, I'm going, no question; but I don't want to be left hanging this year, especially when I have a chance to pursue my dream.

My parents and I have had multiple arguments as to which would be better: a domestic DO, or being a IMG with an MD. I know that I'm more likely to get into a residency with a domestic degree, but its considerably more expensive (I'm going to take loans either way, so that's not a concern), and my parents that I'm not going to get the "respect" that I would get if I were an MD. Another factor influencing their opinion is b/c in NJ, many of the doctors in the practice they attend are IMG, but are MDs. They haven't had much experience with DOs, and I don't know how to convince them that this is as good as an MD.

I would just like people to comment on both sides, what they think about each program. I was trained as a physicist, so none of my friends can really comment to any accurate degree, so I'm asking you for help.

Thanks--And best of luck to all of you incessantly checking your mail.

I would go DO hands-down because you'd have better facilities and better opportunities than a FMG.

But the issue is ultimately up to you, not me, and not your parents. Once you leave home for medical school, you probably won't have time to see your parents -- you'll be seeing patients. Most patients won't even notice the difference -- are you a good doctor or a bad doctor? THAT they will notice.

It is worth pointing out that your parents don't have much experience with DO's yet they are apparently the experts as to whether DO's or FMG's are better respected.

*sigh* Parents.
