So I just found out I was listed as an author on a paper from my old job (probably a couple more to come). I was the research coordinator that physically consented and made sure the patients got the variable (drug/surveys/different treatment) while the doctors did no additional work.

I was excited but then saw someone who consented the first 5 patients (out of 140 which I consented) was also listed. I’m assuming this means it’s not a big deal at all since I’m not first author?

I also had an additional question about my current job. I work on a research project that’s very large and ongoing for a long time, unlike my previous job which had projects that were short and investigator led. I obviously won’t get published any time soon, if ever. Will not having anything to validate my research be a problem? I feel like this job truly is a great marriage of research and clinical work whereas my last one was mostly clinical (seeing/consenting patients with data entry).

Congrats on being published (or at least listed as an author on an unpublished manuscript).Frankly, you were lucky to be added as an author on that paper if you did not have a hand in the design of the study and/or the analysis of the data. Worker-bees in research studies are workers. Your employment with an organization is verifiable. You could get a LOR from the PI or a supervisor if you believe that it would help to make the case that you were engaged in research.
