I have a question about the general surgery requirements for the ACGME 2 yr credits. My previous understanding was that integrated 6 year programs in some way ensured you fulfilled the 24 months of GS requirement and as such you didn't have to do to another GS year. Is this accurate or is this going to vary from program to program (some fulfilling the entirety of the requirements and others not?)

Thanks!

MGH and UW give 2-year GS certificate for doing 16 months (12mo as PGY-1/2, 4mo as PGY-2/3) it depends on the state's medical licensing requirement

OMFS48 is correct that it depends on the state licensure requirement (see above link).

How this is granted is different between programs.

For example, because my program is in MA I need 2 pgy years. However, I only have to do 12 months as pgy2 and 4 months as pgy3 and I get a two year general surgery certificate out of that because of my program's arrangement with the general surgery service.

So would that mean that even if a school gives me a 2 year general surgery certificate that could be void based on how each state interprets that two years or is it as long that you have that certificate you are good to go?
