Hi guys, My first post here. Next year I'm applying to go into medicine. I want to go into neurosurgery--despite my login name. I have spent time in the hospital watching a couple of surgeons, friends of my dad, for a few weeks, and talked to a few other ones. But it also occurred to me that generally people in different specialties are indeed different. I don't know if that's how they are when they go in or if it's the particular training that changes them, but there are some differences. I found only another thread that sort of addressed this with the stereotypes so I want to hear your guys views about the kind of people in different specialties. Now I don't want too superficial or completely FALSE stereotypes. There has to be SOME truth to them. Generalizations by nature are never fully accurate. And in this case, far from it. But I don't want people saying things like people in specialty X are "narcissistic SOBS" or some other one word answer that's just totally extreme. And I don't want this thread to get locked, and sorry if it offends anybody here and obviously stereotypes are true only in a general sense, not always or for everyone or to the same extent
For example, I have noticed that surgeons are generally more confident than people in other specialties. They walk the walk, are sort of aggressive and a little cocky. They are very mechanical minded, and emotionally very strong. They're fearless but emotionally cold. Having said that, I'm sure there are very humble surgeons, shy ones, etc. So what about your views, surgeons, neurologists, psychiatrists, GPs, derm, etc. I really appreciate your views. I want to hear the good and the bad, in terms of skills, communication, personality (how driven they are or social or friendly), intelligence, and so on. Let's keep this light but also informative.
