I've sent in secondaries to ~15 schools, but two I haven't done yet: Mount Sinai and Georgetown. I was hoping to get some feedback on them from you all.

Mount Sinai - I've heard pretty good things about it, and I'd like being in NYC. Can anyone comment on how much their ~$100M deficit affects the med school experience? They've been in a budget crisis encompassing the med school and hospital.

Georgetown - How much does Catholicism/Jesuit-ness (don't know how to properly noun-ify that one) pervade the med school experience? I'm pretty secular, but would be open to a med school that incorporated talk about religious/moral values in treating patients (ie, your patients' beliefs and how they may affect the care you give them). I know they have a class that has something to do with religion.

And Case Western - For some reason I didn't think of them when I sent my AMCAS, but now I'm hearing many good things. It might be a good replacement for one or both of the two above. Any comments on it overall and possibilities for non-clinical medical experience (ie pursuing a second degree)?

Thanks!

I don't know much about sinai or georgetown, but I can tell you little about CWRU. I went there for an interview about a week ago, and I was very impressed. Their facilities are nice (the whole school is wireless and they give you laptop in your first year), their curriculum is very flexible (so that you can choose to do many electives or decided to obtain another degree. I am considering getting a MBA from their business school), the profs are great (I sat in one of their small groups and the prof made the lecture so fun), and now you can do your rotation through Cleveland Clinic. The only bad part was that the school is very pricy and the weather sucks as cleveland. Hope this helps.

Hmm, well, I actually went through the exact same sort of dilemma when I was doing secondaries.

I decided not to apply to Mt. Sinai because of the financial problems... i've heard a lot of bad stuff w/ downsizing, etc., because of it.

I didn't apply to Case Western because it's in Cleveland... I know it's a silly reason, but I'm going to spend 4 years wherever I go, and Ohio is not the state for me.

I applied to G-town, and I have an interview there in a few weeks... I'm not religious whatsoever, but the school really appeals to me for a bunch of reasons. They are very well known throughout the country and people come there from all 50 states. They have an awesome international medicine program, and they're located in the heart of DC (close to tons of cool stuff). I really like the school.... I'll let you know what I think after the interview.

Good luck choosing! I say go for Case and G-town... if you want to go to NY, apply Cornell/Columbia/NYU/AE.

thanks quid and tae,

i started my georgetown essay today and i'll finish/send it out tomorrow. i'm working in dc anyway, and i checked out their international stuff after you mentioned it, and i would definitely take advantage of something like that.

i'm thinking mt. sinai can do without me. and, although case sounds really great (and i've heard pretty good things from friends there too), cleveland isn't really the place i want to be either.

thanks again!

well luckily i found this thread as I was getting to my MT SINAI secondary. So can anyone tell me more about what is going on there??😱 😱
I thought it was a great school but I am a little apprehensive about applying if they are going thru such difficulties.

thanks😛

Out of all the schools that i applied to, MtSinai is at the bottom of my list. I don't know why but there are so many things about the school that i don't like. The only reason i applied there is because i am from NYC and i wanted to apply to most NYC schools.

I didn't apply to CWR because of the location also.

I do think though that this game is so random that even if you feel badly about the location or whatever you should apply and keep your options open.

you are def right about that tezzie! 🙂

I just had my Georgetown interview and I loved the school.
It is a very accommodating place for all religions and ethnicities.
It's philosophy is grounded in the Jesuit tradition~ about the dignity/worth of each person and about care/compassion for the patient. I am not Catholic but I really like the philosophy.

As far as curriculum, it seems pretty rigorous. Students place well in residencies. The school has particularly excellent programs in Emergency medicine and surgery.

Overall, I felt it was a warm, inviting place and I really liked it.

Heya,

I'm a first year here at Mt. Sinai and I can tell you that the school is absolutely amazing. The monetary problems are a concern, but I have yet to see it make a difference in my education.

sure, maybe student groups get a little less money to buy food for meetings, but let me tell ya, there's still a lot of free food!

when i was applying last year, i basically applied to sinai because it was in NYC. i didn't know much about it. but when i interviewed here, it just felt *right*. i don't know how better to describe it...

sometimes you have to go with your gut.

i've been really impressed with the students here as well. my class is really chill. we all work hard, but in general, people are really laid back. last year's match list was out-of-this-world amazing, and 20% of the current third years scored in the 99th percentile on the USMLE Step 1!

well that's enough of that.

Mt. Sinai is one of my top choices, I was in NYC this summer and had the opportunity to research the school. I am very excited to have gotten an interview there, and am not too worried about the recent problems. In the end, I just want an outstanding medical education, and I feel that MSSM will be able to provide me with that. The location is great, not many other schools can offer such diversity in experiences. I think that you should def. apply to MSSM. You never know who might end up giving you an interview!

I work/research for Sinai's Medical School. It is true, they are having financial difficulties, but they've brought in an turnaround team and it looks like things are getting better.

Sinai REALLY takes care of their students from serving food during lecture breaks (sat on a few) to having parties/retreats for them. The students are pretty happy.

Mount Sinai is also one of my top choices.

See ya there Chapinsta
