Hi everybody!

I am currently applying to M.D. schools in the 2017 cycle, and not having great success (interviews at Hofstra at Duke, and then a lot of rejections). I just spoke with my pre-health advisor and thinks I should be thinking about what I might want to do next year if I am not admitted this cycle. One option is pursuing a one year masters program. I am currently on a gap year doing volunteer work and traveling, and am feeling ready to go back to school. I am looking into Georgetown's masters programs, and want some advise on the pros and cons of their SMP program (special masters in physiology) versus a masters in science in pharmacology.

I have a 3.67 GPA 3.62 SGPA 515 MCAT. I don't really need to take classes that improve my GPA, so pharmacology coursework is more intrinsically interesting to me. However, my main goal is to get into medical school, and I know the SMP students are given opportunities to work with the med students and faculty and have a pretty high rate of acceptance after the program.

Any advice or knowledge would be greatly welcome! I wish I could apply to both, but it doesn't seem like Georgetown give you that option.

Well firstly, two interviews at the start of December shouldn't have you so pessimistic! Might get another and have yet to hear back from those two, right?

Secondly, you sure about SMP or masters being the plan for next year if things do go poorly? Why not simply reapply to a big number of mid level schools while working a healthcare related job? Year of income and work experience >> cost + opportunity cost of an unnecessary masters program.

And if you somehow obtain a GPA lower than your current GPA you'd have some big problems. SMPs are considered a tryout for med school. Your stats are fine. Where did you apply?
