Georgetown SMP thread! Who else is going??

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied about 10 days ago and am waiting to hear from them. I am still on three waitlists though, so I hope I get into Med school this year. If not, Georgetown sounds like one of the best programs. I also applied to Finch's and Tulane's.

You'd choose SMP over the other two?

I hope you don't become my classmate b/c that means you got in!

Thanks...I guess I hope I don't have to go to Georgetown too, since you put it that way!! Anyway, Finch's is about $35K so I don't really want that, but I hear they have a high success rate. Tulane is only about $9k, so that's nice, but it's really only one semester, and you don't get a Master's degree. I think D.C. would be a cool place to live and then go to med school the following year...if I get in that is.

exmike,
how long did it take for you to hear back from G-Town? Thanks.

Hello!
I'm currently an SMP student and future medical student to GW. My roommate is going to be moving out this summer, so I'm looking for a roommate. If any of you guys are interested PM me! The advantages of living with me are:
1. living with a future ex-physio (SMP student) that can help you or answer any questions you have about the program
2. apt can come furnished (possibly furnished for free) along with notes and books for classes
3. easy access to G-town

Oh and one more thing... I'm looking for a female roommate. (sorry guys)

I got a reply about three and a half weeks after the file was complete.

hi all!
i'm currently sitting on 3 WLs, but if that doesn't work out, i hope that SMP will!

my file was complete at the beginning of March and i still haven't heard anything... i contacted Dr. Myers and he said my application is still on hold (as of 3 days ago) for whatever reasons. argh 😕 but it sounded like they were still accepting people.

about Tulane--does anyone know if they're still taking applications?

trubluwolv, the deadline for Tulane is June 17, so you still have time. I was looking into that program when I got accepted off of a waitlist, so there is hope. Good luck!

thanx, cocoabutter for the info about Tulane...
congrats on getting in off the WL.... gives the rest of us hope!

happy trails!

thanks for the encouragement, exmike!!

thanks for the encouragement, exmike!

Just got an email from G-Town's SMP letting me know that my file is complete, after having submitted the application like 2 months ago. 😡 So I won't know whether I got in or not until mid-June?

i get the feeling that there are a lot more people applying this year. for example, they're probably not extending the deadline. maybe its b/c of the recent uptrend in med school applications

I'll most likely be at Gtown SMP. 🙂 I also got into CMS AP, CMS MIS, Boston U. MA MS, and Drexel IMS, so I'm having a hard time deciding b/w all the choices. It'll mostly depend on where my fiancee gets into law school as well (she's waitlisted at gw), but I've already sent in my $500 deposit for gt.

Does anyone know if CMS/Finch will extend their June 1st AP deadline?

I just got accepted last week...but im wondering for all of you all that did get in...how are you looking for apts or what not? i hear they are hard to find.

I'm going there in mid-late june to look for apts, so i can give you a report if you want. I plan to live outside of DC in Rosslyn. Apparently its cheaper and nicer outside of DC. Getting to school from outside DC.. now thtas another challenge, but i heard it is easy to take the bus from rosslyn

For those of you interested in looking for housing near Georgetown, I have an apartment that will be available July 1st or earlier if you need. The apartment is in the Fort Georgetown apartment community in Rosslyn (Arlington, VA). It is a 1 bedroom 1 bath apartment with a full kitchen that has just been remodeled 9 months ago, so all the appliances and carpeting are virtually brand new. I also have full furnishings available if you need it. It is a nice apartment in a great location. Georgetown is just a little over 1 mile away (20 minute walk), the metro station is very close by as is the GUTS bus stop which is a free shuttle bus to and from Georgetown.
My roommate and I have been SMP students for the past year and have found our apartment to be amongst the nicest and most affordable housing in the area. If you are interested send me an email at [email protected] or PM me.

I've been looking in the arlington area. I talked with a few students from gtown, and they highly suggested this area for its location and value. I would like to live closer to campus, but I have 2 large dogs and most places in dc don't accept large dogs.

What kind of Stats does G'TOWN require? What else do they look for?

What is the rent like in that area. Not necessarily your apt. but just in general?

hey guys, I just got in to the SMP program today, so as of now it looks like I'll be heading to D.C, unless a medical school decides to let me in. I found a "survival guide" for physios put up by current students that has a lot of useful info on it.

http://www.georgetown.edu/users/lnr/index.htm

It sounds like there are several decent areas in the vicinity to live in such as Rosslyn and Georgetown. I'd like to live within walking distance of the campus if possible. Anyway, I guess I'll be starting my housing search soon. Gotta prepare for an intense 11 months.

congrats! (but ideally, i hope that one of the WL will open up for you soon!)

quick question--when did you apply to the SMP program? i applied way back in March, and my app is still in the hold category. i'm just trying to figure what's happening because i can't get much info from dr. myers.

thanks!

I applied around May 20th or so. I called them a week ago to see if my application had been received and had a nice conversation with Gina Moses, one of the heads of the department. She was very helpful and even told me she hoped I got into med school this year so I wouldn't have to pay all that extra money to go to grad school. Do you know if they have reveiwed your application yet? Hope you hear from them soon.

Hi guys,

I'm in the SMP program now. You might want to check out the off campus housing listing on Georgetown's website. You can use the following to get into the system as a guest:

User Name: guest
Password: auxhoya

There are lots of places to live that are within walking distance from the school. Good luck!

How much is tuition for SMP?

It's around $24,000 for 11 months of instruction.

hope i hear from them soon too, nnankin...
they've reviewed my application already and haven't made a final decision yet. i've spoken to gina moses and ms. cabiness, and been in touch with dr. myers on email. they just tell me to be patient.

this doesn't look so good... but i think it's kind of weird since i'm qualified enough to be on 3 med school WLs, but apparently questionable for SMP admissions. 😕

oh well, i'll just keep my fingers crossed.

You also have to think about living expenses. After all is said and done with loans, I think the maximum amount you can borrow is 46,000 including tuition. Its a pretty penny. 😱

But hey you will be spending that much for four years if you go to a private med.... Although an extra 50g can increase your chances buy alot:laugh: NPIN

for any of you waiting... i've been accepted but will be withdrawing in the next couple of days...

you're pretty much an ideal candidate for the SMP... not sure what your residency situation is, but I would definitely apply to med school as well, and apply to the SMP as a backup in case you dont get in this year. your gpa and mcat are right on that cusp of being above average for the SMP and at the lower end of average for some med schools

SMP budget (including living expenses, etc.) for 2002-2003 was around $44000 and most of financial aid, or almost all of it, is in loans. If you plan on taking out the entire sum in loans, you'll also need to apply for some private loans, such as CitiAssist, because Perkins/FedSub/unSubsidized loans won't be enough. Yes, it's a serious financial investment!

just found out that i was accepted into the SMP program. obviously, my first choice is to get off of a waitlist for medical school, but if it doesn't pan out... i'll see you guys soon.

An odd thing happened to me w/ the G'town SMP admissions process. I submitted everything to the SMP in April, then got pulled off a SOM waitlist in mid-May. I immediately sent a letter to Dr. Myers and the SMP office asking to be withdrawn from consideration, since I'd be attending med school.

Fast-forward to the end of June. I get an email from the SMP program that I had been been accepted and then several days later I get the official letter from the Graduate School.

Now, 6 weeks passed between the time I withdrew and then was subsequently accepted. Guess the paperwork there is very slow.

Re: G'town housing - the GUTS bus has pick-up locations at Rosslyn and Dupont Circle (diff buses). It's pretty fast - the buses p/u every 10-20 minutes and drop off at G'town near the student center.

There are probably better deals, but the Quebec House (on Connecticut - 1 block from red line metro) has studio apts. for $965 /mo and that includes utilities, parking, and a fitness center.

Also, for folks w/ big dogs. There is an apt. complex right across the street from the Fashion Center (Pentagon City metro stop off yellow or blue metro line). It's the Metropolitan at Pentagon City (1-888-803-4434) and they allow REALLY big dogs (up to 80lbs). It's pricey, but I was planning to live there if I was going the SMP route so I could bring my BIG dog with me.

Also, Archstone Columbia Crossing, Avalon at Arlington Square, Windsor at Shirlington Village, and Van Metre Fort George (all in Arlington) allow big dogs.

Good luck, ya'll. Hope the waitlists come through for you, though.

Any SMP'er have a clue what the acceptance rate into med was this year? dr myers said its around 60% so far

exmike and others in the SMP,

What kind of stats do you guys and gals have, i.e. UGPA, MCAT breakdown, undergrad school, extracurriculars, etc? I hope you don't mind me asking. I already know the "average numbers" of those accepted, but I wanted to see some real life numbers and variations.

Thanks.

I had a 3.28 ugrad GPA, 3.7 grad (MPH) and a 35 MCAT

To my knowledge it is around 60% (a month ago)....but Dr. Myers has the most current info

Good luck this year...work hard(but have fun too)...the program works 🙂

Thanks exmike.

Anybody else in the SMP want to share their stats?

I was rejected from Georgetown, but somehow managed to get in at Johns Hopkins. Oh well...🙄

72 accepted was the last that I heard, but that was still in June. I'm sure more people have been accepted sine then. And there were a number of people who didn't apply for 2003 entry.

hey
i just finished the physio program and am from CA
half your class will be from CA....
if you have any questions or want some of the dirt before starting up
pm me

Is there a program like SMP at Johns Hopkins, or were you excepted to JHU med school?!

hopkins has a program, but it is geared more towards those who didnt do as well with their pre-reqs or didnt take the pre-reqs.

What is the difference between the SMP at Georgetown vs. doing a post-bac program of pre-med classes?
From a medical school's perspective is it better to go through the smp or a post-bac pre-med program.

I have low science grades. Would going through smp better demonstrate to medical schools that I'm capable of handling med school classes? as opposed to retaking some science courses like orgo, and physics.

Same question.

I am trying to make ammends for some pitiful science grades from classes taken long ago. I've had a hard time figuring out what to do- and my pre-med advisor hasn't really given me any guidance.

Why did those of you who are doing SMP next year choose it instead of a traditional post-bac?
