Hey, does anyone know what's going with Georgetown's Program? I keep hearing bad things such as they are in danger of losing funding and they might merge with Washington Hospital Center. Is there any basis to this or am I worrying over nothing?

I interviewed there this past weekend. There are a few things going on within the department. They are on provisional probation due to lack of numbers and inadequate documentation. They are in the process of appealing that decision and should have a final decision whether or not they are officially on probation in January. There is a movement within Georgetown's residency programs to merge with Washington Hospital. There is serious talk about merging the programs. I got the impression for the interview day that is going to happen, the question is when. Hope this helps.

Noles925 I have an interview at georgetown in January & I have been hearing that the interview is not worth attending...Is it true that they invite over 25 people on the same day and that they have a group interview?? Please do share your interview experience. I am also concerned about the 'issues' they are having. Did the PD/faculty share any other information with you? Thanks...

I also interviewed there. I can't tell you whether or not it's worth attending but I can say I was extremely disappointed as were a lot of the other applicants I spoke to. But I am glad I went because I was really interested in the program and the interview made it very clear to me that it would not be a great idea for me to go there. There's way too much uncertainty. The PD is leaving to become PD at Washington Hospital, the programs are almost certainly merging and they are on probation. There were at least 50 applicants there. It wasn't a group interview, more like a Q&A for the PD. I will say that if I had known what I know I wouldn't have applied.

Thanks Tausi... I am rather disappointed. I had no idea what was going on when I applied to this program. I heard from another applicant that she didn't learn anything about the program from the interview because there were so many applicants. BTW do you know why they are on probation? I wonder why the PD was even there if leaving to Washington hospital...anyway Thanks Tausi for the information.

I wondered the same thing. It was all very strange. Very disorganized ( mainly because of the hoard of applicants). They said they are on probation because they improperly recorded their numbers (which is what every program on probation says by the way) and because of the impending merger. They said they were merging because they spend so much time at WH anyway but I heard WH are saying something else! Either way there was way too much flux and I wish they had said something earlier. Good luck!

Did GUH interview like that before?

I interviewed there as well and really liked it. And yes they are on probation for not meeting the major GYN surgery numbers and documentation issues.

And yes apparently documentation is one of the many reasons these programs are being put on probation.

The chair at our school said many programs are having problems with the major GYN surgeries because of a change in practice management. Min invasive surgeries and Hys are just not needed as often now.

Well if u look in the past, there have been some very good programs on probation before and now are off it. I wouldn't completely discredit a program because of that.

In any case, of course the merger will occur. Both hospitals are run my same corp. If I was CEO, why would I spend overhead for both programs when they are already integrated together (GUH working at WH). It makes good business sense why this would occur.

And when that happens, they will have like 11 spots in each yr I think. That's a huge program. That is if you like it like that.

In any case. I guess its good for me that many are stuck on the negative vibe.
