Is anyone familiar enough with this program to give me some insight into it? Strengths or weaknesses? Whether they've heard any good or bad things?

I have been called in for an interview into the program and am VERY interested in attending but would like to know some feedback.

And for the record, I already know it's an unaccredited and do not need to be told the dangers of this. That is not my question. I would just like to know about the quality of the program otherwise.

Any advice would be extremely appreciated!!!

It appears they are seeking acred, and 2011 will be the first year it is eligible to apply.

I have a friend who is the first PsyD class there (assuming they get accredited next year, it will be accredited when she graduates). She loves it there.

She loves it? I'm very happy to hear that. Do you know if she feels confident in GSU's ability to gain accreditation next year? If you have any other information, it would be greatly appreciated 🙂

She feels very confident in their ability to get accreditation. She says most of the students are very enthusiastic about being there and that the professors are great. She has gotten some funding (I didn't ask about dollar amounts) for GA/TA/RA type stuff for at least a few of the years that she's been there.

I earned my MS there in experimental psych. The PsyD program there is new, and when I left last year, all incoming students received full funding, including tuition and a stipend. As with anything, there are pros and cons.
Pros:
Low cost of living (Statesboro, GA is very inxpensive)
Guaranteed funding for tuition
Enthusiastic faculty

Cons:
No accreditation (and no guarantee it will happen in 2012)

Faculty are young for the most part, and have limited real-world experience

Program is heavily oriented toward training psychologists who want to work in rural areas; if this isn't your thing, I wouldn't apply there.

Practicums were scarce WHEN I WAS THERE. I'm not sure how it's going for them now. Being in a rural area, there wasn't a large demand for services based on professors I spoke too. Students often had to drive for a while to get to their practicums.

I considered going there, but wanted a program with professors who have more experience, with guaranteed practicum placements. Accreditation was also a big issue for me. Further, my interest is in neuropsych assessment and testing, and that was not offered when I was there. That being said, I'm paying much more here in south FL than I would have had I stayed in GA.

Good luck with your decision!

Funny you say that. I currently live in South Florida and am happy to consider moving to a place like Statesboro where I can get by paying a little more than half of what I'm paying now 🙂 I also am happy to have an opportunity to be funded of course.

Can you tell me how long ago you went there? I'd like to know how long ago these practicum issues were at hand. The lack of accreditation scares the hell out of me. But unfortunately, my acceptances this year are looking bleak, and I am facing a risky situation of taking on an unaccredited school. But I have heard good things in their efforts to obtain accreditation and most people I have spoken to (even those who didn't have to be honest about it) show good faith in GSUs ability to gain it first year. I've just been trying to figure out what kind of chance I want to take on it.
