She is a wonderful holistic dentist who has been practicing for 22 years in Florida, North Carolina and now, CA. Currently she has offices in Beverly Hills and Westlake Village, and her home office in Topanga.

She is a great dentist to get to know because, not only is she GOOD at what she does, she is passionate about her work.

Plus, if you are looking for a sure-fire way to get into dental school... a recommendation from a dentist is a great thing to have!

Take it from me, she took me under her wing and has taught me so much about dentistry that I am confident I will succeed in dental school!

BTW, what happened to the last person? Did he/she get tired of working at the Dr's home instead of working in an actual office?

Actually, yes, shawnone... we did post the same message a few months ago... but NO... we haven't found anyone to fill the position.

To all of those pre-dents stuggling to find a way to "get experience", this is the best place to find it... and that's why I post here.

Alot of us know how hard it is to find a place to shadow or work, or even where to begin. This was just my way of helping out a fellow pre-dent, to help them prepare for their future.

After all, if it wasn't for this doctor and all that she has taught me, I don't think I would've had half the responses I had from dental schools.

Yeah, doing laundry, changing diapers, making coffee, for seven fiddy just didnt cut it. Ah, got to love taking advantage of pre-*insert here*s I'm sorry I will offend people with this. But a holistic dentist? What did she do buy a gallon of Anbusol? This is like chairman Mao and him refusing to see a dentist, so he soothed his rotten gums and teeth by drinking green tea. This sounds pretty dubious. I think you'll get better experience/exposure working for a traditional dentist and filing their records. (mine was nice, he said come stand next to me and learn something, save the filing for the office staff.) Then again, if it's California, anything goes I guess.

Actually, holistic dentistry isn't at all hokey. Don't confuse it with other slang terms being thrown around in the media.

In fact, a dentist probably practices the most holistic methods of healthcare of any given true health profession.

One of the tenets of holistic medicine is to prevent disease and not simply focus on treatments for disease. If you think about it, dentistry fits remarkably well into this mindset. In fact, our largest message is prevention (prophies, sealents, flouridation, proper brushing, flossing).

Whereas medicine by and large only treats diseased individuals, dentistry has a great deal of focus on prevention as well as treatment. In this dentistry always has been, and probably always will be, light years ahead of our medical counterparts.

Gavin, I agree with your point on preventative dentistry but you are wrong in this instance. Dentistry is part prevention, but that goes without saying. Medicine is part prevention; every discipline is part prevention. Prevention and holistic dont go together in this instance. You do preventative maintenance on your car. Are you doing holistic mechanical repair then? No. You are preventing costly repairs. In this instance, it sounds like the holistic dentist is just that, the medical herbalist equivalent of a DDS.

preludexl - Interesting link. My neighbor is a natural-everything freak (ie - buys chicken from a farm rather than the supermarket so her kids don't get exposed to the "bad elements") and loves her holistic dentist. She gave me the amalgam and root canal spiels exactly like the article says when we were talking one day. These holistic dentists are out there and preying on people like my neighbor to promote their angle on dentistry.

True, however medicine is nowhere near as preventative as dentistry.

That certainly is a TRUE statement. The degree to which it is taken is the key. The holistic/quacks that are seen in the media are looneys who have gone off the deep end.

My only concern is that you are labeling the dentist in question as a "quack" simply because they have a holistic philosophy. I think such labeling ought to be reserved until a bit more information is had. Agreed?

You guys have some wonderful points that are quick to address... however, I just wanted to bring up the point that the meaning of my post in the first place was not to point out the fact that you will be working for a HOLISTIC dentist, but simply that this is an opportunity to work closely with a DENTIST, in general.

So, yes, "quack" doctors do exist, but I guarantee she is not one of them. She employs classical homeopathy in her practice but in no way insists that homeopathy is the way to go for everyone. It's just the way she likes to do things.

Kind of like the previous post about the man buying a fresh farm-raised chicken rather than a packaged store-bought. It's just the way he likes it... but it's still chicken either way you look at it! 🙂

What is so wrong about a dentist who wants to stray from the norm and actually care about maintaining one's health overall?

And I see that, also, many of you fail to see the importance of getting some experience before dental school. This doctor gave me all the experience I needed to show the schools how much I know dentistry and how much more I'm willing to know. Trust me... it helps... ALOT!!
