Hypothetical q: if you get charged with assault for getting into a fight and throwing the first punch, how likely is it you get the boot from med school?

I used to think even the most minor infraction would get a person kicked out, but I shadowed a young doctor this summer who is heavily involved at my school, and he said it's actually pretty hard to get kicked out. It probably depends a lot on your school, the details of your action, and the discretion of whoever makes the ultimate decision.

I seriously doubt you would get kicked out for that.

Just don't do it again...

I know I personally would really love for a person who gets in trouble with the law for physical confrontations with people to be the doctor taking care of me...

imho, If you get kicked out of med school for doing something harmless like smoking weed, you should definitely get kicked out for hitting people. I feel med schools are getting to lax with their students.

You generally wouldn't know that about your doctor.

Whether I'm aware of it or not doesn't change the fact.

And your patients may very well find out, especially in this day and age where people who are tech savvy enough can find out tons of information on you. And if they do find out, you think they're going to be happy to find out their physician has a criminal record?

Well, at my school you would probably go before a professionalism committee, and depending on how well you deal with it, there would be a pretty varied range in severity of punishments, up to expulsion.

some laws are fairly stupid. some things that are legal are much more reprehensible than simply fighting mano a mano.

I think it depends on the severity of the assault and amount of occurrences. Not that any healthcare professional should be assaulting others if they can help it...

It is very unlikely you will get the boot from medical school as you are pre-dent....

what exactly is the purpose of this thread?

People get into fights all the time, if we didn't want any doctor like that, med school classes would decrease 😱

People get into fights all the time but not all of them get charged with assault.

True, there are people that throw the first punch(or the early punches) but don't get any repercussions. Of course, not all fights HAVE to result in the cops coming in. Most of them are just guys getting a little too drunk, but then settling it without outside people handcuffing them.

And there are some who wrongfully get charged with assault, when they didn't throw any punches, or who were self-defending themselves.

Yeah I don't think someone should get kicked out of med school just for getting charged with assault. But my point was that people might get physical in altercations without it escalating to the point that the cops get called. Also, you can often avoid physical fights by exercising judgement and restraint.

Repeated assault charges mean you have a real problem for sure.
