My school suggested that incoming students read Iserson's Residency Guide before starting M1. Iserson says all first year students should get a mentor in the field they think they want to go into. Is a mentor someone else in addition to your advisor? Has anyone done this? Do physicians/professors etc. at your school respond positively when you ask for this guidance? I feel strange going to the head of a program (that I would never know at this point that I will pursue have just started my M1 year) and saying I am interested in your field as a possible career choice will you be my mentor? Won't they think it is WAY TOO EARLY to be thinking about residency? If anyone has read this book or got a mentor like it suggests, please share your story & advice. I think once you get a good idea of what you want to do it would be great to have someone who knows you write a lor for residency, but I hear students change their minds a lot about possible fields as they progress through school. Is this a gunner thing?
