Hi, I am currently an undergraduate student in my 2nd year and just recently decided to switch to pre-vet. However I have no hours of experience with working with animals.. I plan on taking a volunteer trip during my Spring break which will give me 50 hours of volunteer work with animals.. I am also going to take a course which gives me hands on experience with large animals.

How would you recommend getting more hours of experience.. and how many hours should I try to obtain for veterinary school?

Here are some threads about getting experience:

A couple go over where to look and how to get started, and at least one covered the differences between veterinary and animal experience, which are counted separately on VMCAS.

As for the amount, well... there's no magical number. Some of it will depend on the other parts of your application... high GPA/GRE can help if you have fewer hours of experience. Really, I would just read the threads above, and ask here if you have any other questions after that. 🙂

Oh, and don't forget you'll need at least one (if not two) letters of recommendation from a veterinarian, so veterinary experience is also very important for that reason.

I was the same way. I did not decide to do pre-vet until second semester of my sophomore year. I just went out and started talking to the local veterinarian, and I found you can make a lot of beneficial veterinary connections that way. I gained all of my experience by gaining shadowing experiences with vets and then moving up from there.

So best advice I have besides the links.. just go out and ask.

I switched to pre-vet mid second semester of my junior year. I've been essentially getting 20 hours a week of vet related stuff on the side while overloading on classes, as well as leaving my weekends fairly open so I can see my long distance boyfriend every few weeks. I'm about ready to pull my hair out, but I tell myself that there are other people who had it worse and pulled off a better GPA than I am currently achieving... so it gives me encouragement!

Like others said, just ask around. Once you're "in" somewhere, you can ask fellow workers/volunteers about other opportunities, and make a nice little network. Connections from shadowing at a vet clinic 10 hours a week last summer led to suggestions of farm volunteering (there's almost no LA stuff near where my parents live so that was great), as well as a list of mixed animal / hospitals that I should check out.

Another example... I've been volunteering at a large (and awesome!) animal shelter, and now that people know who I am, I'm getting enlisted to help with random odd jobs. Next semester I'll be a tech for the shelter animals, after just starting out with dog walking and data entry 🙂

Something else that would be good to look into is research opportunities at your school. I've been able to get hundreds of hours of really great experience with this.

During my year off after I graduate (and apply! AHH!) I have a likely position lined up with the shelter.

In terms of how many hours to aim for, check out various vet schools' websites. Also, email the adcoms as they can give you advice on what will strengthen your application the most.

I decided I wanted to be a vet right before I graduated high school. I started small... volunteered at a local shelter, handed out resumes to vet clinics and landed a volunteer position. When I went away to school, I got some shadowing experience with a new vet who just opened her own practice and continued my shelter volunteering. I just landed a research job for the spring, and like you, are looking into internships that will boost my app.

Good luck 🙂

I have wanted to be a vet since I was a kid, and through some connections, I got a TON of experience early off.....
That doesn't necessarily mean anything though.

The best thing is to get a variety of experience.

Try volunteering at a shelter or a welfare league, a zoo, and as many different practices as you can.
I have never technically "shadowed", but it doesn't hurt.
I would try to get as many hands on experiences as possible.
By actually working at a clinic, they will allow you to get more of that.
