When you withdraw an acceptance from a school after paying the deposit, do they just mail a check back?

Seriously? I haven't done any research on the issue, as I have one acceptance via EDP, but I always thought those deposits were pretty universally NON-refundable?

I believe all US MD schools return 100% of the deposit if you withdraw before the deadline. Other schools may not. I heard of a DO with a 1k deposit, and it was completely non-refundable!

When in doubt, you can always drop the school an e-mail. I'm sure it's a question they get a lot.

I'm glad that's not the case but that would certainly reduce the number of people holding 10 acceptances...

Yeah, my answer was assuming you're talking about US MD schools. They will all refund your deposit if you withdraw before the deadline (I think it was 5/15). I don't know anything about DO schools though. I just know that if you're part of AMCAS, there are standardized rules we all have to follow (including the schools).

Not usc. 100$ nonrefundable.

After I made my post, I went to look at the AMCAS guidelines again, and I noticed that for the schools they have no "rules" - just recommendations. When I was applying last year, I could've sworn I read somewhere that if it was an MD school, you can get back your refund if you withdraw before their deadline. I guess I was mistaken. But then again, I can't say I'm surprised. It's California - very competitive. Probably the worst state to be from when applying to medical school.

Bump. Has anyone had to do this yet this cycle? If so, what did you say in your letter without sounding like an ingrate?

Here are a few gems 🙂

Dear School,

After careful consideration of your program, I have decided to reject your offer of admission. As you know, there are many other excellent medical schools in the country, so please do not take this decision to mean that you are not a qualified medical school. I appreciate your interest in me and wish you the best of luck in filling your class.

Sincerely,

Dear Institution,

The 2007-2008 application year resulted in my interviewing at many excellent medical schools. Unfortunately, there will be a limited number of institutions that I can attend. Based on a review of your credentials, I have determined that you will not be granted my enrollment. This decision indicates the highly competitive nature of the admissions committees who are recruiting me, and does not reflect upon your qualifications to teach medicine successfully.

I appreciate your interest in my application and hope your class is ultimately filled.

Cordially,

Cranial Gavage

In reality though, from that same thread, I will probably use something along the lines of...

To Whom It May Concern:

After careful consideration I have decided to withdraw my application for the _____School of Medicine Class of 2017. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Your name here.

thanks for the responses. When I withdraw they will automatically send me my deposits back?

I just withdrew a few acceptances over the weekend so they have yet to refund me my deposit, but when they do I will post how long it took from the time they acknowledged my withdrawal to the time I received the money and how I received it.

I had re-quote this EPIC e-mails in case anyone missed it. 2nd one is particularly compelling.

Can you send your your letter of rejection via email or does it have to be a formal letter mailed to the school?

Email is generally acceptable-- just ask in the email if there are any further steps you need to take and they'll let you know if they need a hard copy.
