getting good residency

Hi wiboy,

Congrats on your current or future acceptance to med school. You are right, research is important for getting residencies in some of the very competetive fields (orthopedic surgery, ENT, opthomology, etc.) and very helpful in competing for spots in the most prestigious residency programs in any specialty.

I don't fully understand your question. I think you are asking if it is neccesary of very helpful to continue cranking out pubs from your current lab even though you don't really want to be there anymore. I would say no. You have a VERY impressive undergraduate research record. My suggestion would be that if there is a particular medical specialty that you are interested in, find a faculty member at your new medical school who is doing research in that area. My impression is that if you want to go into orthopedic surgery, the residency programs want to see some research relevant to orthopedic surgery and are less impressed by fruit flies and the like. I am sure the same goes for other competetive specialties.

Hope this helps?

Thanks for the feedback. I guess that I was trying to say that I am not guaranteed the scientific success if I leave the lab. I'd probably lose the first authorship paper since the bulk of the data will be gathered after I leave. Coauthorship of two total papers would be a reasonable expectation. The patent SHOULD still be there since it was my discovery, but if you leave a place with that in someone else's hands academic politics can turn ugly and legal guidelines can be ignored. Don't know how much I care about that one, though.

I wanted to know if forgoing any of this would be a bad idea as it might aid with my residency search when I get to that point.

I cant imagine having that in front of me and not finishing it. I wish now that I had put some more effort into my undergrad research and published. For some specialties is realy helps, and no matter what, it is a great feather in your cap. Plus you will feel good about finishing what you started, once it is all over.

Just my honest opinion. Good luck to you.

Ah, I see now. Finish what you started! Don't you think you will regret it if you quit now?
