I have just begun my intern year in IM after taking a couple of years after medical school to work as an hospital administrator (MD/MBA). Anesthesiology has always interested me. However, due to the time taken off between graduating from medical school and getting back into clinical medicine, I felt completing an IM residency would strengthen/broaden my medical knowledge as well as make me a more competitive applicant for an Anesthesiology position. I am looking to complete my IM residency and get boarded then pursue a residency in Anesthesiology with an interest in Pain Management.

Can anyone provide any input as to what road block (if any) I would encounter going down this path? Are there any restrictions to doing a second residency after you have already completed one? I'm not looking to switch out because nothing beats a fundamental understanding of medicine that can be gained in IM. Just want to know what I have to look forward to down this path?

Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I did a residency and practiced Family Medicine before going back to residency in Anesthesiology. I didn't find any road blocks. In fact, the prior training and experience were helpful. Your path is fairly common in Anesthesiology training programs. At least 5 people in my class all had prior training in another specialty and 3 of us were out in practice before the Anesthesiology residency. I heard there could be an issue with a program not getting paid for my additional training but I found that the top programs were still interested. Feel free to send me a PM if you want more information.
