Im undergrad student attending a Canadian university and I am thinking of applying to Howard University, nevertheless I've been doing some research and it seems as if the avg GPA for applicants ACCEPTED is 3.1-3.2, which is lower than most other pharmacy schools in the U.S, yet they only accept like 70 students a year???
Im a bit confused because I assume they receive over a thousand applicants and the majority of them for the most part I assume have attained and even surpassed a GPA of 3.1.... so how do they narrow it down to 70 students?
Are the ppl who apply to Howard U those with lower GPAs and higher incomes. Im not trying to offend anyone just curious. Or is it more than GPA when it comes to Howard.

A student's income has nothing to do with whether you are invited to interview or offered acceptance at Howard or any other college of Pharmacy in the U.S. Your GPA alone won't get you into any pharmacy program, just read some of the threads. You will see students with a 3.6 getting rejected while a student with a 3.0 gets accepted. Of course your GPA matters but schools are looking for more than students who can study well.

Every school is looking for students who, while learning from their program, can also contribute to it in a positive way. If GPA was the only thing that mattered, schools wouldn't be asking for your pharmacy experience, work experience, extracurriculars and volunteer work. They want well rounded candidates and in many (not all) cases, this may end up being someone with a lower GPA but better overall package.

Also, keep in mind that Howard (like many other schools) uses a rolling admissions process. So while a person with a 3.8 GPA may wait until Jan to send in their PharmCAS application, the person with the 3.0 may be getting their acceptance letter in December. (They can't compare you to students that haven't applied yet!) This is the case with many schools so regardless of your stats, apply early.

Keep in mind that the 70 you refer to is the number enrolled, not accepted. I bet half the people or more that get accepted to Howard end up going to other schools. This is not saying anything bad about Howard; it's just that people apply to multiple schools and the "best school" for each individual varies by that individual's perception.

I don't mean to bag on Howard either, but they do have statistically one of the lowest passing rates for the Naplex...i noticed it was similar for their medical school as well. Howard doesn't fit with everyone either being that it's a HBCU.

LostTexan, I know income has nothing to do with a person getting accepted, but they can only accept those who apply right? I was just inquiring on the demographics of the applicants.

Thanks for the replies.

If you want to know the demographics of Howard, it's an HBCU school (historically black colleges and universities), so most of the applicants are African American. Probably incomes aren't exorbitantly high (not trying to come off as mean). Income really has nothing to do with acceptance, however.

so any news from this school for anybody? i called but they dont provide status of the application over the phone!! we just have to wait

I WISH! i had my interview the first week of january! this is like waiting for death....

It took about 6 weeks for me to hear back from them, and they sent the letter via snail mail. I'm not sure if the admissions committee meets on a regular basis.

Hey LOST TEXAN. I have an interview next Tuesday, March 17th. Can you post some of the questions on the interview and some info on the 2-3 quizzes they may administer.

-Thanks : )

Expect questions like " Tell me about yourself." "If you caught somebody cheating, would choke the person to death (exaggeration :meanie:). Tell me about your experience in the pharmacy field. Why did choose Howard? Impress them on questions listed above. A P2 student in the school told me that they really want sincere answers when the ethics questions come up. Tell them the truth.

Don't worry about the stupid math test. High school average students would not fail more than 30 percent of the questions.

When you are answering " Why Howard?", don't forget to mention its long history, what the school stands, and how you intend to approach the Howard mystique (you will see it clearly while you are touring the school:xf:)
