Hey guys,

I just graduated and am taking the MCAT in august. I graduated with a 2.7 GPA. Can this get me into any postbac and or carribean med schools? Be honest, Ive been told I couldn't do it my whole life. THanks guys

Never say die! Get a 41 on the MCAT! Good Luck!

I sorta agree with L, but there's more to know.

First, if you went to a great school, that comes into play. Second, if you were to get a real good score on the MCAT, you've got a shot at US medical schools. You will likely need high 30's to do so. A strong personal statement (that reflects your comittment to medicine and any issues that may have made your GPA less than stellar) would go a long way too.

Chin up! You can do it.

Don't give up!!!!!! I was in a similar boat if not a lil worse then yours. I did a grad program and really improved my grades. I had to apply twice but I got in this year so if I can do it anyone can do it.

I agree with Brad, dont give up!!! I was also in a similar situation and had to apply twice, but I got in this year!! 🙂 The bottom line is that if you want it enough, it can happen. I had to do a Master's degree to improve my GPA, but as soon as I did that, I had 12 interviews!! Oh and I didnt have that great of an MCAT score either, I got a 29. Dont be intimidated by some of the other pre-med students with stellar scores and GPA's!! You can definitely do it!! 😀

I have to say I disagree, your below the 2.75 gpa cutoff a lot of schools have, and lets face it, 2.7 is not going to get you in to med school unless you are a URM, even with a great MCAT score. Now, that being said, DON'T GIVE UP!!! Your not finished!!! You have to be willing to put in the effort and excercise your patience. Apply to a formal post-bacc or masters program and get good grades in it. While your doing that, get plenty of clinical and volunteer experience. You do that, and get a good MCAT (28+), and your golden. I don't believe in fluff, so I call it as I see it. Look at what RachMD2B said, that is realistic. Also, forget about foreign schools. You can get into a US school if you follow our advice, and it will be worth it!! Good Luck!!

I would do a masters program earning a high GPA and then apply to some DO schools. It is going to be very difficult for MD schools unless you would score somewere in the range of 35+ on the MCAt even with if you can bring your gpa up to a 3.3/3.4.

I'm *not* trying to be discouraging, but *if* your 2.7 in undergrad is the result of your best efforts, are you sure you're ready for med school? You might get in, spend a ton of money and just be miserably crushed under the workload and have a hard time passing. That's one reason the med schools value numbers - to some extent they indicate your future ability to handle the med school courseload.

That said however, if you get an amazing MCAT score and have some major extenuating circumstances to explain away the GPA, you should feel ready to apply. Just keep in mind your own personal happiness when setting your goals, and reach out for things that won't crush your spirit and set you up to fail. And don't listen to people who tell you 'you can't do it' - maybe you can't, but that's up to you to figure out. Good luck 😳
